“Wait,” Chloe said, sounding horrified. “Was that your biological family? What were they trying to do?”

Margo’s eyes were back to normal. Her hand pressed over her heart. “I don’t know. I’m so sorry.”

“What are you talking about? This isn’t your fault,” Chloe said fiercely. I liked her more by the day. “I will totally give a statement to the police.”

Emma hugged Margo. “This sucks.”

The four of us stood together, looking around us. I couldn’t think straight, not when Margo looked so completely miserable.

“We should head home,” I said after a few moments. “Will you two be all right if I walk Margo?”

“Of course,” Chloe said. “Be careful though. These people are after Margo, not us.”

We headed back to the main road together before separating, all of us subdued.

“You won’t let anybody hurt her, right?” Emma sounded worried.

“I’ll be fine,” Margo said. “You two be careful, too.”

Chloe waved goodbye then linked arms with Emma to leave.

Hands entwined, Margo and I walked the final part of the way to her house together. She trembled next to me. I held her hand tighter, wishing I could do something to lighten the load on her shoulders.

“Are you doing okay?” I asked. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“What are the chances that wasn’t a harbinger driving?”

“I don’t know. It’s possible, but…”

“Not likely.” She let out a shuddering breath. “What did they do that for?”

“You’re not hurt, are you? I mean, you did stop an accident.”

She shook her head. “I’m tired. I don’t know. It felt different. I can’t explain it.”

“Don’t worry,” I told her. “We have to be more alert now, okay? Don’t go anywhere alone, and if nobody’s going to be at your house, come to mine. Agreed?”

She nodded, but I wasn’t entirely sure she was listening. She seemed completely out of it. I had been tempted to chase the car. Maybe I would have if Victor had been there to stay with Margo. Strange how my thoughts immediately went to him, all things considered.

“You’re still taking your medication, right?” I asked as we neared her home.

Again, she nodded, her face pinched and paler than usual.

Her dad was home alone. He took one look at Margo then focused on me. “What happened?”

I eased Margo into a chair then stood at her side. “There might be a harbinger around. Something weird happened.” I explained as best I could, how Margo reacted, the way the car moved, but even retelling the story sounded wrong. I was missing something. Something had gotten past me while I was focused on Margo and the others.

“Whether it was a harbinger or not, we should go to the police station and make a statement.” Niall Harding's voice remained steady, but I sensed his apprehension.

“Okay, but can we do it tomorrow?” Margo asked. “After everything, I’m so tired.” She looked up at me, creases forming around her eyes. “Sorry about the class. I know you wanted us to take part. Next week, okay?”

“It’s not a big deal,” I said. “Do you want me to hang around?”

She shook her head. “I’ll nap. You should tell your family though. If somebody is after me, then anybody around me could get hurt. It’s dangerous for all of you.”

“Nobody got hurt today,” I reminded her.

“Maybe we got lucky. Or maybe…” She sighed. “We’ll talk tomorrow, okay? Dad, I’m heading to bed. I’ll get dinner later myself.”
