Perdita shook her head with a smile. “We can all eat together, you know.”

“No,” Amelia said firmly. “I want you all to myself for a change.” She pointed at me. “You two boys better not get in my way either. Now, run along and get Margo while I start organising the boxes. Perdita, rest up. If you wind up the size of Zara, you’ll need it.”

She was gone in an instant, a whirlwind of energy bursting through the doorway

Victor shivered. “She’s just as creepy as the harbingers.”

I threw my spoon at him.

“Oh, stop it, you two,” Perdita said wearily. “You’ve both been complaining about feeling useless, and now here’s your chance to be useful, so go on. Get Margo and help keep her mind off everything.” She nodded towards the door. “Get the hell out.”

“Only because you asked so nicely,” I teased, getting up to kiss her cheek. “Don’t forget to relax.”

She smiled sweetly. “Like I said, get out.”

Victor and I left to walk over to Margo’s, Victor grumbling under his breath about bossy women. It was a nice, bright day, but still cold. I was glad to have something worthwhile to do.

“We should take a holiday this summer.” I rubbed the palms of my hands together. “Somewhere hot.”

“Who?”

“You, me, Margo, whoever else wants to go. Isn’t that what people do at our age? Celebrate the end of exams by getting as far away from home as possible.”

“Suppose.” He shrugged. “Maybe.”

“Now what’s up with you?”

He elbowed me so hard that I almost toppled onto the road. “Sorry,” he muttered, reaching out to steady me. “Can’t imagine going on a holiday. Not unless the alpha tags along.”

I glanced at him, concerned. “You’re getting better. I know you are.”

“Doesn’t feel like it most of the time. Dunno if I’ll ever be ready.”

The thought of being tied to the alpha because I couldn’t cope without him made me anxious. “Then I’ll wait until you are,” I told him. “Because we’re going on a normal holiday someday. And we’re going to have fun.”

He laughed despite himself. “You’re such an idiot.” He hesitated before ending on a gruff, “Thanks.”

At Margo’s, her mother looked doubtful while we explained our plans with Amelia. “Don’t any of you have homework to take care of?”

“We can study first,” Margo said, nudging me.

“Yeah!” I said. “Like a study group. Then get into research. Don’t worry. We’re going to be in the alpha’s house. There’s a very pregnant she-wolf living there right now—we’re not going to get up to anything that’s likely to piss her off.”

“We’re not that stupid,” Victor helpfully added.

Mrs Harding looked too surprised to speak. While she processed the conversation, Margo fetched her coat and schoolbag. “I’ll be back tonight. I have to do something. Sitting around waiting is going to drive us all mad. I swear I’ll study, too.”

“Fine,” her mother said resignedly. “Call me, and I’ll pick you up later. Love you.”

“Sure,” Margo called over her shoulder, already making her way to the front gate. “Love you, too!”

Victor and I hurriedly said our goodbyes then followed Margo.

“What’s the deal with the very pregnant she-wolf, by the way?” she asked. “How far along is she?”

“She’s massive,” Victor said. “Ready to pop. I don’t think it’s possible for a person to grow any bigger.”

“Is this wolf breeding season or something?” Margo teased. “Is there a schedule?” When I didn’t laugh, she frowned. “I was joking. Sorry if I offended you.”
