He frowned, not saying anything for a long while. “Let’s not spread this around. Keep the extra information between us. I don’t think anybody needs to know anything else. It’ll only get confusing.”

“You’re probably right.” Amelia yawned. “You know what? She said we’re going to be okay. That everything will work out. I’m choosing to believe her.”

“Everything will be okay as long as we make it happen that way,” he said. “You know how I feel about fate.”

She rolled her eyes in response.

Byron came into the room with more food. I eagerly ran over, ready to tear the food from his hands. But I couldn’t approach him. The way he looked at me made me freeze to the spot, unable to get any closer.

“Interesting.” He set down the food, took enough steps back so that I could reach it. Well?” he said to Nathan. “What do you think?”

“She seems like a normal werewolf,” he said. “Perfectly in tune with the hierarchy. She looks strong. She calmed quickly, responded to Amelia’s touch, and put Dorian in his place for about three seconds before getting comfortable. So far so good. I don’t think we’ll have any real problems with her unless others don’t react well.”

“She was well-prepared,” Byron said. “Asked a lot about the pack and how it works. It seems that could have carried over. Vira said there’s no death around her, but let’s take our time to be sure she’s healing well.”

“What happened with Eli?” Nathan asked.

Byron’s expression turned grim. I couldn’t help growling at the name of my uncle. “It wasn’t him,” he said. “Another harbinger. Vira didn’t recognise him. He was weak, and when he saw Vira, he fled rather than face her. All in all, highly underwhelming.”

“So he’s gathering others,” Amelia said. “Vira never gave us any details on the other compounds.”

“She doesn’t know much about them,” Byron explained. “She was going to be sent to one as a wife but then she ran away and ended up in that sensory room instead. Whatever Eli hoped to accomplish today doesn’t matter in any case. We’ve accomplished our goal. Margo is alive. Death no longer chases her. As soon as she’s feeling better, we’ll talk about where to go from here.”

“How are her parents?” Nathan asked.

“Distraught and panicked,” he said. “The sound of her screams pushed them to their limits. They would have gone to the police only the harbinger arrived and distracted everyone.” He looked uncomfortable. “Her mother requested a photo as proof she’s alive. I’m not sure this is the kind of image she’s looking for.”

“I’ll take one and send it to her,” Amelia said. “She already dislikes me, so that should keep her anger directed at me. I’m okay with her hating me.”

My head shot up. Had I tasted the bitter lie in her words? Everything was so trippy.

“She’s worried about her kid,” Nathan said. “Don’t be too hard on her. They didn’t ask for this madness. They probably feel like they’re tagging along.”

“Tell them not to worry,” Amelia said. “Judging by her behaviour so far, she’ll be able to go home and live as normally as possible.” She sighed with relief. “Things worked out for a change. I can’t quite believe it.”

“Rest up, Margo,” Byron said. “Don’t shift until Amelia says it’s okay. We’ll talk about everything else when you’re ready.” He nodded at Nathan. “I have work to do. Everybody needs reassurance. You and Perdita should decide if you want to come home or stay elsewhere for a while.”

Nathan nodded. “I’m going to see her in a bit. I want to hang around a little longer in case I’m needed.”

I didn’t even hear Byron’s response. I fell asleep despite myself, thoroughly exhausted.

CHAPTER26

Dorian

I watcheda beautiful white wolf sleep and wondered if she would still be the same girl I knew when she woke up. She appeared to recognise me, but would she feel the same way now that she knew what my place in the pack truly meant?

Still, she was alive, and her breathing was steady. That meant more than anything else, and I had no regrets about the choices we had made.

A gentle knock on the door alerted me to Amelia’s presence. “Still sleeping?”

“Yeah. Anything going on outside?”

“Nothing new. Her parents are getting antsy though. I’d bring them in to see her while she sleeps, but I don’t want to push her too hard so soon. I still remember how it felt when I first shifted.”

“I don’t remember my first time.”

She came over to hand me a plate of food. “The wolf has always been with you, hasn’t it?”
