He blinked, and it was a relief when his intense gaze left her face. He rolled up his short sleeve and revealed the rest of the colorful guitar and music notes looping his biceps. “The night I won a Grammy.”

“Are the notes from any song in particular?”

“The one and only.”

“‘Lightning,’” she guessed.

“I peaked too soon.” He rolled his sleeve down.

“You have a long career ahead of you.” She plopped down onto a stuffed chair next to the bed and tugged off one high-heeled shoe. With a groan she rubbed one aching foot. “Thank you. For letting me stay here. I know you didn’t plan on housing me. I sure didn’t plan on intruding.”

“Come on, Pres. It’s not an intrusion.”

“Well, after—”

He held up a hand. “An apology is not necessary.”

“An apology?” What was he talking about?

“I mean it. Don’t worry about it.”

“Why would I apologize?” Shoe in hand, she considered throwing it at his head.

“For getting carried away in the elevator,” he said, his tone set to duh.

Her grip tightened on her shoe. Seriously, she was going to brain him with it.

“I got carried away,” she repeated, exasperated.

“I know. But it’s okay. Happens all the time.”

He pulled his hands over his chest and for once she didn’t admire the snug fit of his T-shirt sleeves at the biceps or the way the soft cotton molded to his pectorals. At least, she didn’t notice as much as she’d noticed earlier.

“Everything you need should be in here,” he continued. “Except the coffeepot, but I’m up bright and early so there’ll probably be some for you when you come down. Night, Pres.”

He shut the bedroom door behind him. She sat alone in the massive room, her shoe in her hand, and blinked dumbly at the door. She thought about the easy way he’d smiled at her, the calm way he’d joked with her and, finally, the outrageous way he’d accused her of attacking him in that elevator.

“Does he have amnesia?” she asked the empty room. He was delusional if he thought this was the end of that subject. After she’d had a good night’s sleep, she’d pour herself one of those cups of coffee he promised and set the record straight about what had happened in that elevator.

For good.
