Twelve

Part of her warned herself not to go home with him, but when he offered a nightcap at his place, she couldn’t make herself say no. She wanted him, and that wanting had increased tenfold since the day she’d first kissed him.

Gavin helped her down from the tall seat of his truck, keeping hold of her hand as he led her inside and to a corner of the kitchen.

“Coffee or brandy?” He didn’t open the cabinet holding various mugs and glassware, but instead twirled a lock of her hair around his fingertip.

Figuring coffee would enhance her jittery nerves, she said, “Brandy.”

He poured the liquor into two snifters and handed her one, tapping his glass against hers. She sipped while watching him over the rim, admiring the firm set of his jaw and the warmth lingering in his storm-colored eyes.

“I’m so damn attracted to you,” he murmured.

“You took the words out of my mouth.”

“I’d better check to make sure.” He cupped her waist and lowered his mouth. She tasted brandy on his tongue, mingling with her own desire for him.

“Is this too fast?” he asked between kisses.

“No.” She fisted the front of his shirt, dragging him closer.

“Good.” He set aside his glass and hers and moved his hands to her jaw. He lit her up with another kiss before backing her across the kitchen where her ass encountered a hard marble countertop.

“Hals...” he started, she assumed to ask if going further was okay. It was more than okay. They’d started something she didn’t want to stop, and by the way his eyes were burning into hers, his hands gripping her waist, she could guess he felt the same way.

“Yes.” She clung to him, her legs intertwined with his, their bodies glued together over their inconvenient clothing. “Let’s not overthink this. Let’s do it.”

“Sounds good to me,” he said, his voice gruff. He cuffed her under the armpits and plopped her butt onto the countertop. She kicked off her shoes and wrestled out of her jacket, so excited—almost too excited. His deep chuckle echoed around them and she stilled.

“Am I...doing something wrong?”

“You couldn’t possibly do anything wrong.” His smile faded as he reached for her coat. “Let me, okay? I’ve been wanting to unwrap you for a while now.”

“Okay,” she agreed on a breath.

He moved her jacket off her shoulders and she pulled her arms free. Then he fingered the buttons of her blouse, undoing the top two and kissing her neck. She tilted her head to give him better access. He took liberal advantage, kissing along her collarbone and undoing another button. “Still okay?” he mumbled before sliding his tongue into the space between her breasts.

“Uh-huh,” she breathed, clutching the back of his head.

She felt his smile and the warm exhale of his breath against her skin when he said, “Good.”

He tugged her shirt open and she wrapped her legs at the backs of his thighs and squeezed. His gray-blue eyes didn’t move from hers when he unbuckled the slim belt around her waist. They didn’t stray when he unbuttoned and unzipped her, or when she lifted her legs and allowed him to take off her jeans.

When she was down to her bra and panties his gaze wandered over her body. She arched her back and hoped he liked what he saw. Holding her breath, she waited for his reaction. It was a good one.

His nostrils flared, his palm smoothing along her side and up and over one of her breasts. “My God, you’re more beautiful than I imagined.”

“You imagined?” She reached for the hem of his shirt, tickling his heated skin with her fingertips.

“Honey, you have no idea.” He pressed his mouth to hers but she pulled away, tugging at his shirt impatiently.

“I want to see you.”

He granted her wish, undoing the buttons on his shirt one by one. As his shirt parted, she was rewarded with muscular pecs and a whirl of dark chest hair. She spread her hands over his heated skin and moaned her approval.

“Like what you see?”

“So much.”
