“Yeah, I care, too,” Jayden said around another bite.

“Are you going to the fall festival at the Texas Cattleman’s Club?”

“Of course,” Jayden answered at the same time Vic said, “No way.”

“You have to go,” Chelsea informed Vic.

“Yes, you do.” Jayden polished off his sandwich and took a swig from his soda can. “You cannot leave me to my own devices. God knows what I’ll do.”

“You’ll survive. You can bob for apples or carve pumpkins or whatever they plan on doing this year.”

“What if you-know-who is there?” Chelsea asked.

“All the more reason not to go.” Vic finally took a bite of his sandwich, but it sat like wet cement on his tongue, flavorless and heavy.

He wanted to see Aubrey. If only to figure out if she still hated him as much as she had the other day. He was too afraid to hope she didn’t. If she had decided she felt nothing for him, he’d have a funeral to plan—his own. This time around, a broken heart would kill him. He was sure of it.

He’d held on to the house to keep hope alive, and he needed to know if Aubrey had held on to the engagement ring for the same reason. As long as she had it in her possession, that meant she was still possibly, maybe considering marrying him. If not...well, she wasn’t.

He didn’t know what else he could do to convince her he loved her and wanted her in his life until his dying day. Time apart hadn’t helped them the first time around.

“Just go and see what happens. If she shows, she might be glad to see you.” Chelsea said.

“That’s very naive of you, sis. I’m surprised.”

“Love can change a person. It changed you. I barely recognize you anymore.”

“Hear, hear.” Jayden held up his soda can and toasted Chelsea’s glass of water. “He used to be a beast. Now he’s a puppy.”

“I’m eating in my room,” Vic grumbled, tired of everyone’s input on what had happened between him and Aubrey.

Once he’d closed himself in his suite, he pulled out his cell phone to check his texts. Nothing. The last five he’d sent to Aubrey had gone unanswered.

He sent one more anyway.
