‘Pretty much what you’re thinking, looking at you.’

‘Which is?’

‘That I was reckless, stupid, living some death wish.’

I swallow as her words cut deep.

‘God, look at you! Seriously! The truth is I wanted to get away from the city, without the traffic and the noise. To take my new car on the motorway and not spend it bumper to bumper. Is that so hard to believe?’

I shrug. ‘If you’d done it without coming off the road, maybe.’

‘The weather was bad, the car was new and I wasn’t used to it. It’s as simple as that.’

‘You were lucky.’

‘And yeah, I’ve heard that a thousand times already. And, before you ask, I was breathalysed and there was zero alcohol in my system, not even a smidgen. It was enough to satisfy Fee.’ She stops, looks away, raises her hand to the window and traces a small circle in the steamed-up glass. ‘Well, maybe not satisfy, but it was enough to prove I wasn’t being reckless on that score.’

She drags in a breath and a sudden melancholy hangs in the air between us. She turns to look at me, her eyes so sombre, so...sad. ‘Happy?’

I’m not happy; I’m far from it as I take in the look in her eyes.

‘If it was enough to satisfy my sister, it should be enough to satisfy you too.’

‘Why?’ Stupid question.

Her lips quirk, her eyes shine. Now she smiles, a big wide smile, and I curse my impulsive question. The truth is I asked because I care. I care more than I should, and now she knows it too.

‘So, nightcap?’

I know nightcap is code for more. More of this. And how much more? An hour, two? A whole night?

And then what?

I know the post-orgasm chill is setting in, spurred on by a return to my senses, to sanity and the reality of the mess we’re potentially walking into. Hell, we’re already in that mess. Of all the people to break my celibacy with, it had to be her.

‘I shouldn’t. It’s late.’

‘It’s notthatlate...and I promise to let you leave early enough for whatever it is you have to be up for in the morning.’

It appeals. It appeals so fucking much. But hell, I’ve already fucked up.We’vefucked up.

‘We’re working together...’

‘And we’re working very well.’

I can’t help the smile that lifts with her words.

‘I don’t want this getting in the way of business.’

‘Which it won’t.’

‘How can you say that?’

She shrugs. ‘Because I can easily compartmentalise the two. Or are you forgetting that I was married to my business partner for twenty years?’

How could I forget?

‘Besides, I took you for a man of his word and you’ve already agreed to come inside, so...’
