Delightful glee spreads across Maddox’s face. “Are you trying to tell me a dirty joke, Penelope?”

“Yes, I am. And I hope it’s not one you know.”

“I actually haven’t heard this one, so I’m definitely intrigued.” He adjusts himself in his seat. “I don’t know. What do a penis and a Rubik’s Cube have in common?”

“The more you play with them, the harder they get.”

The laughter he grants me is like a reward I didn’t know I wanted. And right then and there, I should have known that Maddox Taylor was trouble, in more ways than one.

“So tell me I was right about the small-town girl part...”

After another round of drinks, I’m feeling a little tipsy, and Maddox—clearly tipsy himself—decides we need to take a few shots, so the waitress scurries off like her ass is on fire to fulfill his request. In the time that we’ve been sitting here, I’ve learned the man likes to indulge a bit in the off-season, and it looks like we are both well on our way to making that happen.

“You are.”

He eyes me as he contemplates his next words. “And let me guess: You were the rebel child in high school. Always sneaking out and seeing how far you could push your limits or what you could get away with.”

“Why do you say that?”

“You just don’t seem like the type of woman who likes to be told no, that you’re a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it.” He licks his lips slowly, and I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be seductive, but it definitely catches my attention. “Am I right?”

“Oh, you’re definitely right about that. But sadly, my rebellious side didn’t quite blossom until college.”

“And where did you go to school?”

“UCLA.”

“Damn. Bossy, beautiful, and brainy. Triple b’s. You’re a catch, Penelope.”

I reach up and cup my breasts. “Add in these modest B-cups up here, and you can make it four b’s. Iama catch, Maddox, but I’m not looking to be caught.”

His eyes never leave mine, not even to glance at my chest that I just fondled in front of him. “And why is that?”

“Because I prefer to be alone. Less drama that way. I don’t need a man for a long time, just for a good time.” Staring down into my glass, I lift it and take a sip, biting my straw between my teeth before I glance back at him.

He raises his eyebrows and then nods. “I see your point. Although, why can’t the good time last for a long time?”

“Because something bad always happens sooner or later. And I’d rather not stick around and find out what it is.”

A second later, the waitress returns with the shots Maddox ordered earlier, effectively ending that conversation. Though I can see the wheels turning in his mind from my answer.

“Thank you,” he says, smiling up at her before directing his attention back to me, handing me my own shot. “Here.”

I take the small glass from him and hold it out in front of me. “So how many of these do we plan on taking before we address the inevitable end to this night?”

“Which is?”

“Me in your bed. That’s why you’re investing all of this time talking to me, right?”

One of his brows rises. “Is that what you think?”

“Am I wrong?”

“Partly.” He clinks his shot glass against mine, and I take that as a sign to sling my shot back, soaking up the burn as the vodka slides down my throat. We both drop our shot glasses on the table, and then I lean back again in the booth, wincing just slightly and feeling warm all over.

“So which part am I wrong about?”
