“Nice to meet you. Mind if I sit?”

“Sure.” Mase scoots over, making room for me. “So, you’re the new guy in town, huh? How’s that working out for you?”

I shrug. “So far so good, I suppose.”

The dude on the other side of the table, Trick, smirks. “Heard you met Kida at Perky’s on Monday.”

My brows shoot up. “That’s her name? And how’d you know that was me?”

Trick nods. “Small town, word gets around. Don’t worry though, she’s harmless. Just don’t stand too close to her.”

“Why not?” My brows dip, because Kida is fuck hot and I very much wouldn’t mind being close to her again. Just under different circumstances. Obviously.

“The girls call her the Catastrophe Magnet. She never means for shit to happen; it’s just drawn to her.”

Okay, like that makes any more sense. I’m about to ask him to explain when Carter arrives with a jug of beer and a stack of glasses. He slides in next to Trick, then another guy I hadn’t noticed drags a chair to the end of the booth, too.

Carter sets out the frosty glasses, then fills them as he introduces the newcomer. “Kass, this is my new youth social worker, Arlo. Arlo, this is Kassidy, Chance’s nephew.”

Kass directs an eye roll at Carter, then extends his hand to me. “Nice to meet you, Arlo. And before you ask—’cause I can see the question in your eyes—yes, Chance is my aunt. She and my dad are twenty-something years apart.”

My brows lift. “Cool, man. I was eighteen when my first baby sister was born, so I get the age gap thing.”

Kass smiles and jabs his elbow into Carter’s ribs. “See, it’s not that weird.”

Carter scoffs but doesn’t get to comment further because Kass is already talking again. “Were you guys talking about Kida when I walked up? I heard the wordscatastrophe magnet,so I assumed…”

Trick glances at him. “Yeah, Ariel didn’t tell you about her latest stunt? Keeds tackled Arlo in Perky’s the other morning. Thought he was one of their skippers.”

Kass grimaces. “Shit, sorry, man.”

I frown at everyone around the table. “First, what’s a skipper? Second, how does everyone know about this already? And third, why do I get the impression none of you are surprised?”

Mase throws a heavy arm over my shoulders, laughing. “Welcome to Shiloh Springs, my man.”

ChapterSix

“So,you’re telling me there’s five of them? Five badass bounty hunting babes?”

The guys have just finished telling me about the infamous Hunter Sisters. And Kida, the youngest one’s not so stellar track record.

Trick nods. “Yep.”

I drain the dregs of my third beer, then place the empty glass on the table in front of me. “Surely one tiny town like this can’t need five bounty hunters. Unless I’ve moved to a cesspool of criminal activity or something.”

“Nah,” Kass says. “It’s nothin’ like that. Also, there’s actually ten people who work at Hunters & Co. They take cases from all over the state. Shiloh Springs is a central location, so it makes for a good home base.”

“How do you even know all that?” I ask.

“Aside from being a journalist at the Gazette and having lived here my whole life, Ariel’s my girlfriend.” A broad smile stretches across Kass’s face. “She should be here any minute.”

I’m so confused. “And Ariel is?”

“Me,” a chick dressed all in black with a long black braid hanging down her back says as she drops into Kass’s lap. She curls an arm around his shoulders, murmuring, “Hey, baby.” She brushes a quick kiss to his lips before turning to smirk at me.

Why is she looking at me like she knows something I don’t? And why does she look vaguely familiar?

Kass clears his throat, drawing my attention to him instead of his girlfriend. “Ariel is a Hunter. Kida is her baby sister.” He gives her waist a little squeeze, then says, “Babe, this is Arlo. He moved to town this week and, apparently, he met Keeds already.”
