“It’s not that bad. Mostly first degree and maybe a few little bits of second,” I tell him as I step toward the table where he’s waiting.

He takes a moment to make his own assessment, then nods. “Yeah, okay. But you’re having the rest of the day off. Take this with you,” he says, handing me a tube of ointment.

“Thanks, but that’s not necessary. I can duck home, take a couple Tylenol, and grab a fresh shirt, then I’ll be good as new.”

Carter just shakes his head. “That’s going to sting like a motherfucker all day. You won’t be able to concentrate for shit. Just go home, chill out, and I’ll see you Monday.”

I open my mouth to argue, but he levels me with a deadly stare, and I snap my jaw closed.

“I can take you,” Kida offers, picking at her electric blue nail polish. “It was my fault after all.”

Spending time with Kida is tempting. I take one last look at Carter, then turn back to her. “Okay, thanks. And it wasn’t your fault. I stepped into your hand as you were reaching out. So, technically, it was my own fault.”

She shakes her head, a soft smile curling the corner of her pretty mouth. “Let’s agree to disagree.”

I shrug. “Okay, let me grab my stuff.”

ChapterEleven

Arlo slipshis coat on sans his tee, and instead of doing up the buttons, he holds the sides out from his chest.

“I really am sorry,” I murmur, opening the door for him as we reach the reception area.

He steps out into the cold and his jaw clenches. “Jesus, it’s cold as balls out here.”

I can’t stop my gaze from raking over his nicely toned chest and slightly defined abs as his nipples turn to hard peaks. I don’t even bother attempting to be discreet. He’s made it clear how much he likes me, so I’m not going to hold back. He’s even hotter without his shirt on. I sigh happily.

“Umm… as much as I’m enjoying the eye fucking, I’m freezing here. Can you maybe ogle me inside your car?” Arlo asks.

My eyes snap up to his. “What? I don’t have a car.”

“But you said you’d take me home?”

“Oh yeah. Umm… I can drive you home in your car,” I offer.

He gives me a cautious look. “Okay, if I let you drive my car do you promise not to crash it?”

“Of course.” I cross my heart to show him how serious I am.

He hums but digs into his coat pocket, wincing when the fabric brushes against his sore skin, then hands me his keys and tilts his head to the left. “It’s over here.”

Once we’re inside, I hit the button on the dash to start the car, then crank the heat for him. When I reach for the gear shift, he places his much bigger hand over mine, and I arch a brow at him.

“Why don’t you have a car?” he asks.

I shrug. “I don’t need one. I live with Ariel and Snow, and Ariel usually drives us. Besides, this isn’t exactly a huge place, I can walk anywhere I want.”

He nods but doesn’t look completely convinced. “So, you don’t have a vehicle by choice, then? Not because you crashed it or anything?”

“Arlo, I am an excellent driver. Can we go now?”

“Okay, sorry.” He releases my hand, and I put the car in reverse.

His eyes bore into the side of my head as I drive us to his apartment building, a few blocks away.

“What?” I ask, flitting my gaze to him for a split second.

“Why did you come to the community center this morning?”
