My fingertips twitch as the memory flashes in my mind.

Kida tips her head back, peering up at me. “You okay?”

“I’m fine,” I tell her, brushing a gentle kiss to the top of her head as the elevator doors open.

Once back inside my apartment, I go to the fridge and get out the nondescript white box I had dad pick up for me. Actually, it’s the second one he picked up for me since they didn’t make it last week, he got to keep the first. Next, I grab two forks then take it into the lounge area where Kida is sprawled across my couch. I grin down as I tell her, “I got something for you.”

Her eyes light up as she stares at the box in my hands. “What kind of something?”

“The best kind.” I hand it over, then drop down beside her, watching her closely as she opens the lid.

She doesn’t say anything as she stares inside the box, and after a moment of her unexpected silence, I ask, “What’s wrong?”

When her eyes meet mine, they’re shiny with unshed tears. “You got me a cheesecake?”

I nod. “Why are you upset? You love cheesecake.”

“This is the most romantic thing anyone’s ever d-done f-for me.”

“Babe, don’t cry.” I throw my arm over her shoulder, holding her to my side. “You can’t be sad when you’ve got cake, remember.”

She sniffles and nods. “I’m not sad. I’m happy. You make me so stupid happy that I don’t know what to do with it all. You just… You get me.”

“Yeah, Keeds, I get you. And I’ve got you. Whenever you need cake, I’m your man,” I joke, trying to lighten the mood.

Kida closes the box, places it on the coffee table, then climbs into my lap. I drop the forks and wrap my arms around her. Breathing her in, she feels like home. Wherever she is, that’s where I want to be. “Keeds, this is going to sound crazy, and you probably think it’s too soon, but it’s how I feel, and nothing has ever felt better than this…” I take a breath. “I thought things like this grew over time, but with you, it’s like the moment you tackled me I was irrevocably changed. Kida, I—”

“I love you, too,” she exclaims.

“You’re not even going to let me get the words out first?” I ask, laughing as her cheeks turn bright pink and she drops her forehead to my shoulder.

“I can’t believe I just ruined our first I love you’s,” she mumbles.

Slipping my fingers into her long pale blonde hair, I tip her head back until she looks at me. “It was perfect.”

She shakes her head, but she’s smiling. “Everything you said, I feel it. And then there was the cheesecake, I just got overwhelmed.”

I arch a brow. “So you don’t love me?”

“What? No. That’s not what I said. I meant—Oh, you ass,” she chides when my smile slips free. “For that, I’m not sharing my cake.”

“Hey now, no need to be rash.”

She rolls her eyes, leans back, and snatches up the box up and both forks from the couch beside me. “Fine, you can have one piece.”

“I didn’t bring a knife over, so looks like I’ll just have to guestimate the size of my piece while I’m eating,” I tell her.

“Nice try.” She settles the box between us, reaches inside her bra, and pulls out what looks like a pocketknife.

My brows climb up my forehead. “You carry a knife in your bra?”

She shrugs. “Of course, I do. For emergencies just like this.” She flicks the frighteningly sharp blade out then proceeds to cut me one single slice. “There you go. You’re lucky I love you. I am not a sharer. Unless it’s Bosco. But I guess I could occasionally make an exception for you.”

“Oh wow! How gracious of you to put me up on such a high pedestal, with your dog…” I deadpan.

“Hey, don’t get sassy or I’ll eat this whole thing.”

I eye her petite stature. “You could try. But you’re tiny, and this is a big ass cheesecake.”
