Mya

“Ijust know that if I don’t get a good night’s sleep soon, I’m going to lose my mind,” I whined into the phone to my best friend, Meredith. “I practically flipped out on my boss today when he asked me to explain the proposal that I gave him.”

“Did he not like it? You’ve been working on that forever. Isn’t that why they gave you the promotion?”

“Yes, I guess, and he liked it after I explained it more. He wanted further clarification, and the last thing my brain wanted to do was clarify anything.”

I stopped at the mailbox room on the bottom floor of my apartment complex and shoved my key into the slot, wiggling it to get it to work. With the money we paid here, these locks should work without hesitation or physical acrobatics to get the mechanism to turn. Finally I got it open, yanked out the three envelopes and some sales flyers, slammed it closed, and wiggled the damn key again to get it out.

“Is he going to use your marking plan?”

“I don’t know. You know this whole thing is so fucked up.” I growled as I turned and plowed right into someone. I struck him so hard that I literally bounced off of him and stumbled back. His hand shot out and grasped my arm before I landed on my ass. However, my cellphone and my mail weren’t so lucky as they went sailing through the air.

“Jesus, woman, why don’t you watch where the hell you are going?”

My face snapped up to the tall, dark-haired Adonis that I had seen in the building a few times. Any other time, I might have started to drool, but my mood was anything but sexual at the moment. “Me! I was already in here! Why didn’t you watch where the hell you were going? You’re the one that slammed into me as I was leaving!”

“Whatever, I’m in a hurry.” He brushed around me and shoved his key into his lock.

“Yeah, well, pay more attention next time. You almost knocked me on my ass.” I glanced around but didn’t see my phone. “And where the hell did my phone go? If you broke my phone—” I growled as I spun in a circle seeing my mail, but not the phone. The man shuffled his feet, and I heard something bounce off the wall. “You just kicked my phone.”

He looked down as he pulled his hand out of the mailbox. “Guess you found your phone,” he stated, as he slammed his door and then yanked out his key.

He didn’t even bother to look my way again, but as I glared at his profile, I saw the ticking of the muscle in his strong jawline. Was he upset because we had run into each other? Or perhaps he was upset about something else, and I was just here to take the brunt of his frustration.

Whatever it was, it didn’t matter. The guy stalked away, leaving me gaping after him until the sound of Meredith calling loudly for me from the floor six feet away reached me. I scooped my phone up and put it to my ear. I also grabbed the envelopes scattered around, one with his shoe print on it.

“I’m here,” I growled.

“What the hell was that?”

“You remember that guy that I told you about that is sexy as sin but rude as fuck?”

“Oh, the one you want to do dirty things to you?” She asked with a laugh.

“Well, that was him. He came barreling around the corner, almost knocking me on my ass, and I dropped my phone and my mail. Would you believe that asshole kicked my phone and didn’t even bother to pick it up for me? He just walked away—what a jerk. He didn’t even say he was sorry. I changed my mind. I don’t want that neanderthal to do dirty things to me. Not if that’s how he treats people.”

“Well, you know as well as I do that most sexy men are complete jerk-offs. They know they are sexy and think that they can get out of anything because of that.”

“Yeah, well, this guy better watch himself.”

“What are you going to do if he doesn’t?”

I laughed, “I’ll put him over my knee and spank him.” I stepped out of the mailroom and glanced to the left before turning to the elevators. Standing by the door, reading a piece of mail, was the sexy Adonis.

My eyes burst wide, and I twirled quickly toward the elevator and rushed to hit the button. Luckily, the door opened right away, and I practically jumped in and closed my eyes to say a quick prayer that he didn’t join me. I heard Meredith calling my name, and I whispered, “Hold on a second.” I stared at the doors as they began to close.

I couldn’t believe he had been standing there. I had figured he had left. Maybe he was so engrossed in what he was reading that he didn’t hear what I had said. At the last possible second, a hand shot through the elevator door, and it began to open again. My eyes jumped to his and then away. Oh, shit!

“I’ll call you back,” I said to Meredith and slipped my phone into the pocket of my coat.

“No need to hang up on my account,” the man said as he punched the button for the fourth floor and then stepped toward the back of the small elevator.

“I wasn’t,” I replied. However, that was a big fat lie. “I didn’t want to have a conversation while in the elevator with a stranger.”

I heard him move, but I refused to look his way. A moment later, his voice was right beside my ear, and I jumped. “I was hoping you might tell your friend what kind of dirty things you wanted me to do to you.”

My cheeks were instantly on fire, and somehow, I kept my jaw from dropping to the floor. At the same time, my knees began to quiver, but not from fear. His husky voice and the warmth of his breath on the shell of my ear had caused that reaction.
