Alex kissed the area between my breasts a couple of times, and then he stood and pulled his hips back. He helped me sit up but didn’t look me in the eye. Was he disappointed? Had he not enjoyed himself? Perhaps he was embarrassed that it didn’t last longer. If what he said earlier was true, he hadn’t had sex for a while since he had been going through a divorce for eight months.

Alex fixed his pants, tucked his shirt back in, and collected his jacket from the floor, shoving his arms through the sleeves before locating his cumberbund and sticking it in a pocket.

“You’re leaving?”

He frowned. “Yeah, of course.”

I returned his frown and shifted awkwardly to get off the counter. Jesus, the man didn’t even help me get down. Once my feet were on the floor, I tugged my dress back into place.

Alex stood near the hallway to the door. Jesus, he couldn’t get out of here fast enough, could he?

I didn’t say anything as I glared at him. He glanced my way, did a double-take, and then nodded. “Okay, well, I’ll see you later. I’m sure Rebecca will let me know when the next event is.”

He didn’t wait to see if I was going to respond. Not that I was planning to. Instead, he practically ran to the door and threw himself into the hallway. The door closed with a loud click, and then there was silence. Well, it was quiet in this room. Inside my head, there was a chaotic mess, including a woman pulling her hair out while she screamed a the top of her lungs: “What the fuck just happened?”

I didn’t move for a good minute, and then another phone notification reached me. I scooped my purse off the floor and yanked out my phone to call Meredith to tell her I was alive.

I noticed two different text messages, and I looked at the one that had just arrived from Meredith, Call me when you get home. I can’t wait to hear the details of your night.

I looked at the other one from Milt, Sounds like you have the cat in the bag. I heard you two made quite an impression at the gala. Hope you keep him happy tonight.

Holy crap! That was the message that had arrived while Alex was screwing me. I lifted my phone and threw it across the room. As it smashed into a few pieces, I winced. Maybe I shouldn’t have done that.

My shoulders slumped, and I ignored the mess and went into the bedroom. I needed to change and shower and get all the lasting remnants of Alex off my body. With that thought, I froze in the middle of my room, and my hand landed on my belly. We hadn’t used a condom. Holy crap! We hadn’t used a condom!

Oh, my God! We hadn’t used a condom!

At any other time, that wouldn’t be a problem, but I was in the process of changing from one birth control to another. There was a chance that I could get pregnant during that transition. Oh, shit! Oh, shit! Oh, holy shit! I put my face into my hands as I began to hyperventilate.

I dropped to my knees, trying to focus on my breathing. It took a while, but finally, I had it back under control. My entire body was sweating, and I felt weak as I tried to get to my feet. I hadn’t had an anxiety attack like that in years.

Eventually, I managed to get into the shower and wash off. A few minutes later, I was climbing under my covers, and the moment my head hit the pillow, I succumbed to the tears.

An hour later, I was lying in the dark, trying to sleep, when I heard knocking at my door. I sat upright. Had Alex come back? Was he going to apologize for leaving the way he did? I hustled out of bed and somehow managed to get my feet tangled in the sheets. I landed on the floor face down, but burst back up and ran out of the room as my fingers brushed my hair back.

I took a moment to calm myself at the door, inhaling and exhaling before grabbing the doorknob and pulling it open.

“Jesus! You’re alive!” Meredith shoved open the door when it began to crack, and I stumbled back. “Is he here?”

“Who?”

“Him! The neanderthal! Is he here? Is he the reason you haven’t called me back? I’ve been calling you every five minutes.” She stepped into the apartment and threw her arms around me. “I was about to call the super and have the door opened.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because you always answer the phone, and I thought maybe he killed you or something.”

I shook my head and walked away from her. “I’m fine. My phone broke.” I went into the kitchen and opened the fridge to stick my head into it.

I heard her following me and then the crunch of something plastic. “What is this?” She bent down. “Is this from your phone?”

“Maybe,” I replied, as I took out the orange juice.

“Did your phone break, or did you break your phone?”

I shrugged as I poured the juice. Meredith came around the counter and spun me toward her. “Oh, boy. What happened?”

I was about to tell her nothing, but the tears that I thought had dried up came back with a vengeance. “I had sex with Alex.”
