It wasn’t until we were sitting down to dinner that he finally asked. I glanced at him and then back to my plate, “It was a long day. Can we talk about it after we eat?”

“Did something go wrong with the show?”

“Um, no,” I replied, keeping my attention on the chicken I was pushing around.

“Then what’s wrong? You are very quiet tonight and tense.”

I tried to swallow the food in my mouth but couldn’t seem to. It took me three tries to get it down, and then I got up and went to the counter, where I pulled out the information Rebecca had given me for him to approve.

I sat back down at the table and finally lifted my eyes to Alex. “I need you to read something and approve it.”

“What’s it for?”

“For the biography in your portfolio.”

He frowned and stuck out his hand. “Let me see it. Does it suck or something?”

“No, actually, I think it is incredible, and it will help you connect with people.”

He read the paper, and I knew precisely when he came to the part about being an orphan. He inhaled sharply, and his jaw locked, a muscle ticked widely in the side.

I wasn’t sure if he read the whole thing or only half of it, but he finally clenched his hand and wadded it up. “What the fuck is this?”

I swallowed, “Alex, listen—”

“No! You listen, Mya! You told them, didn’t you? That’s how they knew?”

I nodded. “Yes, I did.”

He burst to his feet, throwing the paper down onto his plate. “You had no fucking right! That was no one’s business! That was private!”

I got to my feet, coming around the table to try and calm him. “Alex, wait, please let me explain.”

“You think I want to hear another lie come out of your mouth? I can’t believe you! You promised me that you would keep that to yourself!”

I didn’t remember promising that I would keep it to myself, but I did remember promising that I would be there for him and not hurt him. Oh, my God! I had broken my promise. “Alex, please, let me explain why we wanted this. What it will do for you.”

“This isn’t about me, Mya!” He shouted as he stepped away from me and put the chair between us. “This was about something that I wanted to do privately! This had nothing to do with you, your firm, or anyone else! No one needed to know what I would do with the money or that I had grown up in a fucking orphanage! How fucking dare you!”

Alex was livid, and he had every right to be.

Alex started to walk away, and then at the last second, turned back around and grabbed the paper off the table. “Is your boss the one that wanted this information?”

I nodded.

“Fine, if he wants it, then I’ll give it to him.” He began to stalk toward the door, and I chased after him.

“Alex, wait! What are you going to do?”

He spun around his hand on the doorknob. “I’m going to give him a fucking piece of my mind for invading my privacy. That’s what I’m going to do.”

“Alex, please let me explain.”

He spun around, getting in my face so fast that I flinched . “You have nothing that I want to hear, Mya. As far as I’m concerned, you no longer work for me.”

With that, he twirled back around and was gone.

That night, he had his music blaring, and every beat of his bass was another fissure in my heart. That dark rain cloud had broken wide, and all hell had rained down. I felt horrible and broken and could not even imagine how I could ever fix things with Alex.
