She rubbed her hands back and forth, “Well, that depends on if you want comfort or elegance. Wood is homier, more comforting, whereas metal and glass are more elegant for hosting guests.”

“What do you have?” I asked her.

“Me?” her brows popped high on her forehead.

“She has wood,” Diane said. “She’s all about comfort.” Diane slipped her phone into her coat pocket, “I’m sorry to do this to you guys, but I have to get going. My boss needs my help again.”

“It’s Sunday,” Shelby stated. “What the hell does he need your help with on Sunday?”

“Didn’t I ever tell you that lawyers don’t take a day off?” Diane joked as she headed toward the door but paused and approached me. “Sorry, I haven’t been around to help, but work has been busy.” She gave me a quick kiss goodbye and waved over her shoulder as she headed to the door, “I’ll talk to you guys later.”

A moment later, the door closed, and both Shelby and I stood there staring at it.

“I’m not sure what’s gotten into her recently, but she sure has been spending a lot of time at work,” Shelby stated as she glanced around my living room again.

“Yeah, I know.” I sighed, “Can I get you a drink?”

She laughed, “I don’t think the two of us should be drinking in each other presence again.”

I chuckled, “Why is that? I thought we had a great time the other night.”

“Oh, it was nice, but it got a little—”

She paused, and I continued, “Erotic at the end?”

Shelby laughed, “Yeah, something like that.”

“Well, I promise to behave myself tonight, and it’s not like we are going to have multiple rum and cokes. I’m only offering a beer. I haven’t had time to stock my bar yet.”

“Okay, I can do one beer.” She paused, then glanced at her watch, “Crap! I can’t. I have something in the oven back in my place.” She started toward the door, then paused and looked back, “Diane was going to stay for dinner, but I guess that’s not happening. Would you like to come down for a welcome to the building meal?”

“You honestly think that I would say no to a home-cooked meal that I didn’t have to make myself?” I chuckled. “Let me grab my keys.”

Shelby waited at the door for me, and then the two of us started down to her apartment. “You know you could have told me that we’d only be a few doors away from each other.”

“I wasn’t sure that would be a good thing to have admitted that night.”

She stopped in front of her door and stuck the key in, turning to me, “Why is that?”

My voice was low when I continued, “Because, with my luck, you would have packed up and moved in the night to get away from me.”

“I’m not sure I could get away from you even if I moved.” She said softly, then turned the key and pushed open the door.

“What do you mean by that?” I asked as I followed her into her apartment and let my eyes rest on the sway of her hips in her worn blue jeans.

She stopped abruptly and turned, and I had to put the brakes on quick or run her over. She stared up at me, her light green eyes clear and bright. “It means that I keep replaying that night over and over again in my mind. I know I shouldn’t. I know that it’s wrong because you’re seeing my best friend, and it might not mean a damn thing to you, but I can’t stop thinking about it, Zeke.”

It was like she had flipped a switch because my cock was instantly hard.

I fisted my hands at my side, forcing myself not to reach for her. I knew that if I did, nothing was going to hold me back now. Not after hearing her admit that. “I keep thinking about it too, Shelby.”

“I’m not telling you this because I want you to do something about it. In fact, I don’t want you to do anything about it. I just want you to know that I’ve thought about it.”

I nodded, not sure what to say in response.

“Are we good then?”

“Baby, we’re good.”
