I shook my head, “If you were going to do that, what made you change your mind and not tell her?”

“Diane and I were talking, and I mentioned that I finally got my move-in date. Diane told me that she had a good friend that was an interior designer, and I got sidetracked.”

“So, you used her to get to me?”

He laughed, “I wasn’t using her, or maybe I was, but that didn’t work, now did it? You already refused to help me, and you say you won’t sleep with me, so I’m losing on all fronts.”

“Diane likes you, Zeke.”

His brow furrowed, “I’m not so sure about that.”

“What? She talks about you all the time. Have you not noticed how she looks at you?”

“She doesn’t look at me any differently than any other man.”

I laughed, “Oh, yes, she does.”

“If she is so into me, why has she been so distracted? Why hasn’t she been around more? Or calling and texting me?”

“Because she’s busy with work.”

“A month ago, work didn’t matter to her. She constantly sent me text messages and called me at least twice a day, but then it stopped, and she is now suddenly never available. Maybe it is work, but I don’t think that’s it. It doesn’t matter, though, because I know it won’t work between us.”

I thought about what he said. Diane was somewhat distracted recently, and he was right. Usually, I received ten to twenty texts a day from her, but lately, I had barely heard from her much myself. “I guess she has done the same to me.”

“Do you know why?” he asked, and I shook my head.

“No, I’ve been so busy that I honestly haven’t paid much attention. Diane hasn’t said anything to me, but you are right. She has been overly distracted.”

“See? I will tell you that I plan on telling her soon that things won’t work out between us.” He paused for a few seconds. “I think my life is taking me in a different direction.”

Was I the different direction he was referring to? Was he even being honest with me about not being a playboy? I didn’t know him well enough to know the answer to those questions.

“Well, I guess the best thing for us to do, since we are neighbor’s and all, is to get to know one another a little better.”

“Are you talking about in the biblical sense? Because if you are, I’m all for that.”

I laughed, “No, that was not what I was referring to, Zeke. Let’s avoid being naughty neighbors and just try to be friends.”

He grinned, “You sure you don’t want to be naughty neighbors? I could totally get into that.”

I gave him a stern look, “Yes, I am sure you could.”

He lifted his wine glass and held it out to me, “Okay, then to new neighbors that want to be naughty but aren’t—yet.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at him as I clicked my glass to his, “To new neighbors.”

After he sipped from his glass, he set it down, “Do you think there is any way that you might be able to find some time to help me decorate my new place? I don’t need a lot of help, but if you can point me in the direction, I could do most of it on my own.”

“Fine, I could help you out a little bit. What exactly do you want to do?”

“Well, I’d like to paint the walls, get new living room furniture. As you saw, I don’t have much, and that’s because I knew I was getting more, so I only brought a couple of things with me. I’d need some bookshelves, a seating area, some lamps, a few pictures for the walls.”

“And window dressings. You’ll need those too. Being on the second floor, the building next to us has a good view into our apartments.” I leaned back and grinned at him, unable to hold the words back. “But then again, you seem to be a voyeur of sorts, so maybe you want to be watched.”

His eyes snapped up to meet mine, “You had to go there, didn’t you?”

I giggled, “Sorry, it just popped out.”
