“Yep.”

She held up a bottle of red wine, “Good thing I brought red with me then.”

“Perfect, but I already have a bottle open and breathing. We can save that for after dinner.”

“It’s going to be a two-bottle night again, huh?”

“It can be any number you want,” I replied as I stepped past her and went into the kitchen.

“I do believe two bottles is my limit.” She said with a chuckle. “Any more than that, and I’d be taking my clothes off and dancing on the furniture.”

I turned and looked at her, then walked around the corner and pulled two more bottles off my rack and held them up, “I’m game if you are.”

She laughed, “You’re funny.”

I winked at her and put the bottles back on the rack before returning to the kitchen and pouring our glasses.

“How has your week been?”

“Busy, but good. What about you?”

“Same.”

She took the glass that I held out to her. “Did you, by chance, speak to Diane?”

“Well,” I replied as I turned to the stove to stir the sauce, “I tried. Like usual, she’s busy, and we haven’t had a chance to speak.”

“Ah, yeah, I haven’t spoken to her yet either.”

I turned to look at her, “Were you going to say something to her about us?”

She pursed her lips, “There isn’t an us, Zeke.”

“Not yet, but I damn sure know there will be once I tell her it’s over.”

“You’re so certain of yourself, aren’t you?”

I set the spoon in the spoon rest and came around the island toward her, stopping a foot away. “Yes. I like you, Shelby. I want to see if there is something here.”

She seemed undecided as she returned my gaze and finally sighed, “Yeah, I like you too, Zeke. I know I shouldn’t, but I do.”

I brushed my knuckles over her cheek, “I’m glad.” I should have turned around and walked away, but I didn’t. Instead, I curled my hand around her neck and brought her face to mine. “I’m going to kiss you, Shelby. Do you have a problem with that?”

“No,” She breathed the word toward me, and I didn’t hesitate to take her lips with mine.

The kiss was like nothing I’d ever felt before, and it sent a spike of desire straight down my spine into my balls. I wrapped my arm around her waist, and she put her arms around my neck, tilting her head more to the side to deepen the kiss. Our tongues fit perfectly, and I loved the minty taste on it as it brushed against mine.

Before I lost control of myself, I forced myself to back off and rested my forehead against hers. We stood like that for a few seconds, both needing a moment to let that sink in. Then I lifted my head and stared into her beautiful light green eyes. She smiled up at me, and I leaned forward and dropped a kiss on her forehead before turning away.

“We should eat.”

“Yeah, probably a good idea.” She replied as she collected her wine glass.

I plated the chicken parmesan and carried it to the table where I had already set out utensils and napkins. Both of us were quiet as we got seated, and I wondered what was going on inside her head.

Had she felt that kiss as profoundly as I had? It wasn’t just that it turned me on—it sure as hell had. It was that it felt different than other kisses. Like it meant something more. Was that even possible?

“Do you enjoy cooking?” Shelby asked as we got seated.
