Shelby

Iwoke in a daze, wondering if all that had happened the night before was true. Had I dreamed it all? I glanced around the bedroom in my apartment in the city. Well, I had come home, which meant that the rest of it probably happened too.

Alright then. I tossed back the covers and got out of bed to get ready for work. I was just about ready to leave when Diane called, and I almost sent it to voicemail, but I decided I needed to face the music.

“Hi,” I said as I answered.

“Hey, Shelby.” She replied, and both of us were quiet for a moment.

“I’m sor—” I started to say, but she cut me off.

“Save that apology for later, Shelby. I think we both have things to apologize about. Can we meet for dinner tonight?”

“Absolutely. Name the time and place.”

“How about our favorite Mexican restaurant at six? I’ve been craving their guacamole recently.”

I chuckled, “Sounds perfect. I’m sure you are having quite a few cravings.”

Diane laughed softly, “Yeah, you wouldn’t believe how many, but we can talk about all of those tonight.”

“I’ll see you then.”

We hung up, and I rolled my shoulders to release the tension that I’d been holding in them. Diane and I were going to be alright. Now, if only she were okay with Zeke and me being together.

What if she wasn’t? What if she said that we were okay if I didn’t see him again? Could I do that? Could I give up a man that I saw a future with for my best friend?

I had to hope that she didn’t ask that because I wasn’t sure if I could do that.

My day went fast as I put out the fires that my absence had caused, and before I knew it, I was rushing out to meet Diane. She was waiting for me when I arrived, and I couldn’t have asked for a better hello when she stood up and hugged me tightly.

“Stop looking so nervous,” She said with a laugh. “I’m not angry with you.”

“How can you not be? I got involved with a man that you liked.” We took our seats.

“Because I knew that Zeke wasn’t right for me. If I had thought he was, I wouldn’t have hooked up with my boss.”

“Doug! You slept with Doug! I thought you hated him!”

She winced, “Maybe hate was too strong of a word for my feelings. I guess I didn’t want to like him because I was attracted to him, and he was married.”

“Diane, is he the father?” She nodded. “But he’s still married!” I said toward her, slightly shocked that she had slept with a married man.

“He’s getting a divorce,” She put her hand up, “And yes, he is for real, but not because of me. The first night we were together, he had just signed his divorce papers. I witnessed him signing them.”

“Well, okay, that’s a little better. Do you really like him? Enough to have a child with him?”

She shrugged, “I guess it doesn’t matter, does it? I’m having this baby, Shelby. Doug wants to be part of this child’s life, and he’s promised me that he will be. I am not sure that either of us is interested in a serious relationship. I’m not blind to the fact that he was using me to get over his wife.”

“Okay, that’s good, but what are you going to do?”

“I’m going to need your help.”

“Of course! I’ll do anything that I can for you.”

She smiled, “Good. I’m glad to hear that. Now I need you to do me another favor?”

“What?”
