She studied me for a few seconds, and the car behind me honked. I started moving through the intersection after checking to see that it was green.

“Yes, I work out. Do you?”

“I do a few times a week, but sometimes my back and legs hurt badly, and I have to avoid working out for a while.”

“Your back and legs?”

I nodded. “I used to be a firefighter, and one day at a bad house fire, I fell through the floor and landed on the stove below. I broke my back and both legs. They weren’t sure I would ever walk again, but I did. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go back to what I was doing before. Still, after ten years of being a smoke eater, I knew there was a market for fire suppression systems, and I started this company with the help of Lydia and an old friend who passed away a few years ago.”

“Wow. I don’t even know where to start after that. I’m sorry about your friend and about the fact that you can’t be a fireman anymore, but I’m glad you can walk again.”

I peered her way. “Yeah, me too. I might not have if it weren’t for Lydia.”

“How long did you say you have known her?”

“Since I was twelve. Since she moved down the street from me, we have been best friends.”

“Have the two of you ever been romantic before?” She asked, and I almost grinned at her, but I kept my gaze on the road and answered.

“After I learned to walk again, we were intimate for a couple of days, but we quickly realized that we were better friends than lovers. She told me recently that having sex with me was like having sex with her brother.”

Whiskey laughed. “Does she do that often?”

“What?” I glanced her way.

She hiked a brow. “Have sex with her brother?”

I laughed loudly. “No, she doesn’t even have a brother.”

“Oh, so she was comparing sex with you to her imaginary brother.” She paused. “I’m not sure what that says about you, Zack.”

I pulled into the parking lot of one of my favorite lunch spots and parked before replying to her. “I don’t know what that says about me either, but if you ever want to know if she’s right or not, just let me know, Whiskey.”
