I turned off my oxygen tank, removed my mask, then turned to help Whiskey do it. Her eyes were wide behind her mask, and she laughed the moment it was off. “That was scary and kind of incredible.”

Isaac opened the rear door, and we put the masks away. I turned to her and saw her holding her hands in front of her. They were shaking. “Come on, let’s go outside for a moment and get some fresh air. You’re shaking because of the adrenaline.”

I led her to the warehouse door, and she quickly exited. She stood outside, her head tilted to the sun and her eyes closed. “Are you okay?” I asked as I approached her slowly. Perhaps that hadn’t been such a great idea after all.

“I’m fine,” she replied, opening her eyes and turning toward me. “Great, in fact. I feel alive!”

I chuckled as her eyes sparkled brighter than usual in the sun’s rays. “I’m glad to hear that.”

She stepped forward, putting her hand on my bicep. “That was incredible, Zack! I have never done something so daring. You might think it’s stupid, and maybe it is, but that was crazy!”

I remained still, watching her thrive on the adrenaline still rushing through her. “I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

“Oh, I hated it, but the adrenaline rush was fantastic!” She laughed, lifting her face further toward mine. “I feel so good right now that I want to do something else.”

“If you say sky diving, I might get worried.”

She stepped closer to me. “No, I’m not that stupid.” Whiskey shocked me by lifting on her tiptoes and moving toward me as one hand wrapped around my neck and pulled me toward her. I sure as hell didn’t expect her to kiss me.

I held Whiskey tightly to my chest, tilting my head more so I could deepen the kiss. It wasn’t until a train whistle went off on the tracks a half-mile away that, Whiskey and I pulled apart and stared at one another.

She looked just as surprised as I felt. This was the second kiss we had shared, and it was just as shocking as the first.

I cupped her cheek. “Kissing you is like nothing I have ever experienced before, and I don’t know how to explain it.”

She frowned. “I’m sorry. You probably think I suck.” She started to pull away, and I captured her other cheek and pulled her face back toward mine.

“Suck? Are you kidding me? Whiskey, you make my knees weak. You make my heart pound in my chest, and I can’t seem to get enough. I feel like I could kiss you forever and never get tired of it.”

“What?” She seemed baffled by my statement.

“What don’t you understand about what I said?”

She stepped back. “No, I understand, but I think you have the wrong person.”

I frowned. “Why would you say that?”

“Do you remember that my husband said I was frigid? That doesn’t sound like the kind of person you want to kiss for a long time.”

“Don’t get me started on what I think of your soon-to-be ex-husband. Whiskey, you have so much passion in you. I can feel it. Maybe he didn’t bring it out in you, but I do. I can see it shining in your eyes, begging to be released.”

“No, you can’t,” she whispered between us.

“Yes, I can.” I paused. “I’m going to kiss you again, Whiskey. This time, let yourself go. Give in to what you want. Show me how you feel. I want you to burn for me as I do for you.”

Only a second before we leaned toward one another, the door opened behind us, and she quickly stepped back as her gaze moved in that direction.
