By Friday night, the hunger had grown to an almost unbearable level. I stood in the kitchen and prepared a chicken and rice dish that would be ready about the time he said he would arrive. The weather was perfect, so I set the table on his balcony and found another bottle of white wine in the bar area that had been chilling in the wine fridge.

I wasn’t nervous until I heard the door open, and then butterflies took flight in my stomach. I was washing my hands when I heard Zack step into the kitchen.

“Something smells delicious.”

I grabbed a hand towel and turned to find him only a few feet away. Our eyes locked, and I swear all the air in the room was sucked out as I suddenly felt dizzy.

He stepped forward slowly, not saying anything until he was right in front of me. “Hi.”

“Hi,” I replied shyly.

He lightly brushed his knuckle over my cheek. “How long until it’s ready?”

“About ten minutes.”

“Okay,” he stepped back. “That will give me time to take a shower.”

“Yes, please. You do stink.”

He laughed. “I probably do.”

I grinned at him. He didn’t smell, at least not bad, but I was trying to lighten the mood. “Go take a shower, and I’ll have it ready when you finish.”

He nodded and walked away, collecting a small suitcase he had set in the hallway. The moment he was gone, the air was back, and I could breathe properly. Oh, this was going to be difficult not to throw myself at him.

I had never been the type of woman to do that, but Zack made me want to throw my arms around him and leap into his arms. What would he have thought if I had?

Too late now to know. I busied myself with the last minutes of preparation and was about to plate it when I felt him enter the room again. This time, I was busy plating the food and didn’t turn. His chest brushed my shoulder, and shivers raced down my spine as he brought his mouth to my neck and kissed it once.

I froze. “Why did you do that?”

“Because your neck looks very inviting with your hair pulled up.”

I turned to him, prepared to tell him to stop. “Zack—”

Only when my eyes locked with his, I found the desire I was trying to hide shining back at me from his. I dropped the serving spoon and shifted toward him. He curled his hand around my neck and pulled my mouth to his.
