Page 54 of Burn For Me

I woke up to an empty bed and wondered if I had dreamt the whole thing. Not that it was a bad dream, but I would have preferred it to have been real. I paused on that thought. Perhaps it would be better if it were a dream.

I quickly got up, used the bathroom, brushed my teeth, and then pulled on clothes. I cracked open the bedroom door and heard something in the kitchen. I slipped into the living room to see my clothes piled on the coffee table and the blanket folded and sitting on top of the pillow.

Nope, didn’t imagine it. I headed toward the kitchen and peered around the corner to see Zack pulling something out of a bag. I leaned against the threshold and watched him as he unwrapped something and then set it down to pull something else out of the bag.

“Hope one of those is for me,” I said, and he turned quickly, his eyes running down my body and back up before he grinned.

“I might have something here for you. Do you want sausage or bacon?”

“Either,” I said with a shrug as I approached him.

“I was going to bring you breakfast in bed.”

“Do you do that often?”

He laughed. “No. I have probably only done it once or twice before.”

“Trying to butter me up, so I come back to your place?” I asked, and he turned and looked at me with a blank expression on his face.

“Too obvious?”

I chuckled and grabbed a sandwich and a hashbrown from the local convenience store. “Yeah, just a little bit.”

“Did it work?” He asked as he carried his food to the table in the corner.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Zack,” I sighed. I honestly didn’t want to argue with him. I barely knew this man, and yes, we had incredible book-worthy sex twice, but he still didn’t have any right to tell me what I should do. “I appreciate your concern. I really do, but I’m fine here. I told you that it's no big deal. It was just a random attack.”

“What if it wasn’t?”

I took a bit of my breakfast sandwich and studied him. “You think Wade had something to do with this, don’t you?”

“Yes.”

“If he did, he would have called me afterward. Besides, what reason would he have to do it.”

“Because he’s a controlling bastard and didn’t want to let you go.”

I laughed around another mouthful. “Did you forget that he’s the one that divorced me?”

He shrugged a shoulder. “So.”

“So, I don’t think Wade would go through that much trouble. In fact, I know he wouldn’t. He hated me.”

“See, this is what I think. I think he realized what he lost, and now he wants you back.”

“Hardly,” I said, then glanced around and saw the two cups of coffee on the counter. I went to get them and carried them back to the table. I peeled the lid off the one for me and saw it was black. “Are they both black?”

“Yeah, I wasn’t sure how you took your coffee.”

“With cream.” I collected the creamer from the fridge. “The fact that you don’t know how I like my coffee is just another reminder to me that we barely know one another. While I appreciate all you have done for me, I can take care of myself.”

“I’m sure you can. That doesn’t stop me from wanting to help.”

“Probably not, but it should. We barely know one another, Zack, and you have already done so much for me. I can’t keep asking you to do more.”
