Lord Brown nodded. “My impression of him in Town was that he is a quiet sort. Keeps to himself. Perhaps he is like you were saying and is one of those individuals who opens up more easily in writing than in company.”

“He is Lady Frances’s brother, so perhaps they are both of that nature.”

Lord Weston glanced over his shoulder, and his gaze caught hers yet again.

A zip of pure heat burst through her, as though lightning had struck her heart. Grace leaned back and blinked several times. Never had a glance fromanyonecaused such a reaction inside her.

“Are you all right, Miss Stewart?” Lord Brown asked.

Grace forced her lips upward and into something she hoped looked like a smile. “Yes, my lord. I am quite well. Now, I believe you were telling me about tonight’s dinner before we were interrupted.”

“Ah, yes. The potatoes will be absolute perfection, you can count on that.”

As Lord Brown dove back into his monologue about that evening’s meal, Grace utterly refused to give Lord Weston another glance. She was here to enjoy her Christmas after a trying year. She was here to make friends and hope for less harshly judgmental connections. She was here to encourage the man sitting beside her, as she found him to be the most pleasing man of her acquaintance.

No one and nothing, not even the Earl of Weston, was going to ruin Christmas for her.
