“I am happy, though, to know Lord Windham will soon be gone.”

“What he’s done,” Seth said, “is certainly immoral. But it only borders on the illegal.”

Charlotte agreed with a sigh. “Emma was being paid where she worked, so we can’t claim he was forcing her into slavery.” The act passed earlier that year would have deemed such behavior against the law. But Seth was right; Lord Windham had just skirted the law.

Seth cupped her elbows in either of his hands. “You have saved that young woman, all the same. And you are the reason Lord Windham will not be allowed to barter other girls for his own gain in the future. You have reason to feel proud.”

What would she have done without Seth by her side during all of this? She gave him a smile and then drew herself up. “Then I suppose we best find her a position. I have written to as many modistes as I can think of, but I know several women who are always dressed in the first stare of fashion. A quick visit and I can learn who makes their gowns. That’ll give us a list of several more women to reach out to.”

“A woman with a plan—I like that.”

Heat tickled at her cheeks. “Come, hostage of mine,” she said, taking Seth’s hand. “We need only see that Emma is resting well, and then we have many calls to make.”

He tugged on her hand gently, turning her back around so that she faced him.

His small half-smile was gone, as was the teasing in his eyes. “Are you certain I should accompany you?” he asked. “I thought just last night we agreed not to be seen in each other’s company.”

Charlotte paused, then placed a hand on his chest. “You know, it’s not often I misspeak. Less often still I say something truly stupid. But what I said last night was utterly laughable. I already regret it.”

The tips of his lips twitched. “I must admit I wasn’t overly fond of the notion, either.”

“I meant it when I said I couldn’t have done this without you.”

“Yes, you could have.”

Charlotte lifted a brow. “Very well then, Idon’t wantto do this without you.”

Seth picked up her hand, which had been against his chest, and lifted it to his lips, kissing it gently. “Very well, then. Lead the way.”
