“I don’t know what I did to deserve your friendship, Peter,” Jeffrey whispered. “But I thank God for it. When I find a way to repay you …”

“Let’s not discuss repayment until long after you find the truths you seek.”

Jeffrey managed to draw the conversation towards other, lighter topics. Peter expressed his excitement over one of his children’s newfound love for reading. He spoke about another number of rose bushes the gardener had planted in his garden. The words were entirely banal, yet they sizzled with such love and adoration that Jeffrey found himself half-interested and certainly jealous. What a remarkable thing it would be to find such excitement for the in-between moments of life. What a remarkable thing to be calm enough to appreciate the little moments.

When Peter’s wife approached for another dance, Jeffrey could make an excuse to slip away for the night. He shook Peter’s hand once more and said, “Thank you again for your assistance. I’ll never forget it.”

To this, Peter said, “I’m holding yet another dinner party this week. I hope I’ll see you there?”

“These dinner parties. They’re becoming quite consistent, aren’t they?”

“That’s been the plan, my friend,” Peter said with a quick wink. “Charlotte’s invitation has already been sent.”

Jeffrey sniffed and turned his eyes towards the ground. “Good,” he muttered inwardly, hardly loud enough for Peter to hear.

Perhaps he would allow it.

Perhaps he would allow these feelings to balloon out from his heart.

Perhaps he would allow his life to be changed forever.
