It’s essential that you end your quest to discover the truth.

If you do not, you will regret it.

Furthermore, if you make any mention of this little note to the investigator, Baxter, you will pay.

Eternally yours,

Your guardian angel

Charlotte’s heart hammered with apprehension. She scanned the letter again and again, her mind racing, until Louisa finally said, “What’s happened? All the colour has drained from your cheeks.”

Charlotte forced her eyes upright to look at Louisa, at Margorie. Both of them had stood to look at Charlotte properly. They looked petrified. Charlotte understood that their faces only reflected her own.

“Don’t worry about it,” Charlotte echoed. “It’s really nothing.”

“Did he tell you that he can’t see you anymore?” Margorie demanded.

“It’s nothing like that,” Charlotte said.

“So it’s not from Jeffrey?” Louisa asked.

“No.” Charlotte hurriedly folded up the letter and delivered a large smile, one she hoped reflected just how little she wanted her friends to suspect anything was amiss. “It’s really nothing to speak on.” She cleared her throat and said, “I don’t suppose either of you would like another round of tea? Perhaps I can go and ask for it.”

Louisa and Margorie asked several more times—clearly unwilling to allow Charlotte an easy escape. After a time, however, they recognized the pressing was futile. Margorie admitted she would drink tea, eat a snack. She returned to her chair, settled, and began anew—ready once more to speak about Harry, about the children they might have. “I’ve always wanted to be a mother,” she said with a sigh.

This allowed Charlotte a moment to slip out of the garden and heave with panic against the far end of the hedges. She pressed her hand across her mouth, careful not to make any noise.

Her life was in danger.

She’d pushed someone too far.

How did anyone know that she’d been hunting for answers?

Perhaps Jeffrey hadn’t been careful enough in his asking.

Perhaps someone had tracked Jeffrey down and listened in on his conversation with Charlotte.

Regardless of how it had happened, it was clear that somebody, somewhere, was incredibly displeased about her hunt for Brooks’ murderer.

Perhaps soon, she would find Brooks’ murderer after all: the moment he came to kill her, as well.
