“But … is this wrong?”

“I’m not the best judge of what is right and wrong. I feel guilt admitting to this, as you’re a member of my staff. But from the moment I first laid eyes on you, I knew that I was fond of you.”

“And I of you.” Just then, the moment became overwhelming, and Laura felt the need to exit the study at once. She quickly got up from her chair to do so. “I am so sorry.”

“There’s nothing to be sorry about. Please, don’t leave.”

Laura’s back was turned to him, and she heaved a sigh, turning to face him. She felt tears coming to her eyes. How was it that the moment was so overwhelming? Laura stood frozen as Edward got up from his seat and slowly walked around the desk. Laura’s entire body began to shake. He gently grasped her shoulders. His large, warm hands were powerful yet gentle. The shawl wrapped around her fell to the ground. She looked up into his eyes, which had narrowed, gazing at her intently. Every inch of Laura’s body was on fire. She could tell what was about to happen next.

Edward slowly leaned down, placing his lips upon Laura’s, who closed her eyes in ecstasy. The kiss was gentle. Intimate. Laura delighted in its feeling. It was as though the entire world around them disappeared, and it was just she and Edward, disappearing in their moment of rapture. Laura felt warmth and dampness between her legs. She didn’t know what the sensation was, but it felt like a longing that she could not control.

Laura wished never to pull away, but the sudden realization that she was kissing the master of the house was too much to bear. She pulled back, tears still in her eyes. “I promise that I will never do that again.”

Edward pushed away a tear with his finger. “I was the one that did that. I’m sorry if it offended you.”

“It didn’t offend me in the slightest.”

“Then let me do it again.” As Edward leaned in once more, Laura gasped and stepped back, leaning down to pick up her shawl. She wrapped it around her once more and quickly ran to the door, and Edward did not try to stop her. Instead of going to her room, Laura went down the hall and stepped onto the veranda, looking at the moonlight. Her heart pounded in her chest. Tilting her head up to the night sky, Laura closed her eyes, and her lips parted. The memory of the kiss still swirled through Laura’s body. It cascaded through her in waves of pleasure.

Yes, she deeply wanted to kiss him again. Part of her wished that Edward would follow her onto the veranda and grasp her, but he did not come. Did the master feel guilty about the kiss? Laura certainly didn’t. It would become one of the most cherished moments of her life, but it couldn’t happen again. It just couldn’t.

There was no future in it. Laura would not be the master’s mistress. She wouldn’t be able to bear that existence. If she could not have him fully, then Laura wouldn’t have him at all. It would be too painful merely to have stolen moments with him, and nothing more.

The cool night air brought Laura back to her senses, and she exited the veranda, walked down the hall, down the stairs, and into her room. The taper on the desk continued to flicker. Laura laid her head down on the bed and blew it out, resting herself in the darkness.

Was this moment for real? Had Edward really kissed her in his study? Yes, it was all very real, and Laura would spend the better part of the evening dreaming about it, reliving it with every fibre of her being. She was in love. Laura was in love for the first time, but she’d have to let that love go. Laura would resign herself to being in love with a man that she could never truly have.
