“Romantic notions aside, we can follow our hearts.”

“Thanks, old chap.” Graham’s sentiment moved Edward, but it didn’t make the decision any less difficult. If he married Anna, society would praise him. If he married Laura, society would shun him.

Back inside, the ball was in full swing. The music played, there was the sound of chatting and laughter, and trays were being passed with refreshments. To his dismay, Laura was nowhere in sight. He searched the room but couldn’t locate her. Edward had the mind to ask Harrison to find her before he was interrupted in that course of thought.

“Edward.” He turned. Norman stood before him.

“Norman. I don’t recall sending an invitation.”

“I noticed. Rather rude of a younger brother.”

“I beg to differ.”

The two brothers stood placid in front of one another. Did Norman come as a response to the letter that was sent weeks before? Should he tell Norman about the funds he’d never be able to touch?

“You’re here to ask for more money, aren’t you?”

Norman laughed. “That’s ridiculous.”

“Why else would you come here? You’re not one for parties that involve no gambling.”

Norman’s face turned grave. “I’m putting all of that behind me. Turning a new leaf.”

“Ha!”

“It’s true. I want to make amends.”

Edward couldn’t believe the words that were coming out of Norman’s mouth. There was no chance that what he was saying was true. Norman seemed jittery, shaky. That was no doubt from the late evening that he had the night before.

“Very well. Why don’t you find a way to regain the funds that you’ve lost. Funds that belonged to the Pembroke name.”

“I’ll find a way. I’m a resourceful man.”

“Good. Why don’t you come back once you’ve done that.” With that, Edward began to depart, but Norman grabbed him by the upper arm.

“Brother, give me a moment.”

“You had your moment.”

“I am in need of funds, but not much.”

Edward turned to Norman in disgust. His instincts had been correct. There was only one thing that Norman wanted in this life, and Edward would not give it to him. “Get out of my house.”

“Edward, hear me out. I know that I can make it back.”

“Did you hear what I said? Get out of my house this instant.”

Norman froze. He was crestfallen. The duke heaved a sigh before turning and walking out the door. Edward watched him depart, his anger turning into sadness. Norman would never change. He’d spend the rest of his days digging himself into the ground. He wanted so much more for his brother, but it could never be. All that Edward could do was refuse him the money that he so desperately needed and carry on with his life.

Anna approached. “Edward!” It was the last person he wished to see.

“Yes?”

“Where have you been all this time? Everyone has missed you.”

“I was engaged in serious talk with Graham.”

“I hope nothing too serious. Tonight is a cause for celebration!”
