“That would be most kind.” The tears fell down Laura’s cheeks once more, and Edward couldn’t hold back. He reached for her and pulled her into his arms. Not to kiss her but to comfort her. She clung to him, and once more, Edward felt as though everything was right in the world. Laura was fully his at that moment. He didn’t wish to let go.

Moments later, she softly pulled away, and Edward did not prevent it. He let her do as she pleased. “Promise me one thing.”

“What’s that?” Laura looked up to him. The anguish in her eyes nearly brought him to his knees.

“Keep your mind open to a different conclusion.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Don’t throw me out of your heart. There can be a future for us.”

“All right. I certainly can’t throw you out of my heart.”

Laura made her way to the door. She didn’t turn back. Once she was gone, Edward finally dropped to his knees, placing his hands on the ground. Everything was lost, but Edward was determined to still find a path forward. He’d do everything that Laura requested. He’d write to his brother that very afternoon and make sure that she was safely taken to Sage Brook. He’d ask about her daily.

Edward was confident that Percival would send word. Oh, but how his heart was desperately aching in his chest. The only woman that he’d ever truly loved had walked out of his room after she had been held safely in his arms. Must he marry Anna Rutley after all, if only to get it over with and forge ahead in life?
