Chapter 10

The following morning, Reginald took his appointed seat at the breakfast table and was pleased to spot Sarah across the way, clothed in blue. The gown seemed to show off Sarah’s décolletage in the most inviting way, and Reginald had to force himself to look away.

The Duke of Faversham stood at the head of the table and addressed his guests. “Ladies and gentlemen, I hope that everyone slept soundly and that this morning’s ale alleviates any discomfort.” There was laughter from the guests. “As you know, there are a variety of entertainments scheduled for today, and I do hope that you’ll partake. I have arranged for a ride and picnic this afternoon for those who are interested.”

There seemed to be genuine interest around the table as guests nodded and chatted. Reginald spoke with the fellow on his left. “It seems a beautiful day to have a ride.”

“Indeed,” the man replied. “It’s something of a ritual here at the estate following a ball. The men ride, and the ladies meet us for the picnic.”

“That sounds agreeable.” Reginald looked across the table once more, and his eyes met with Sarah’s. He greatly hoped that she’d attend the picnic so they might continue their conversation.

“I look forward to it every year.”

The remainder of the breakfast was pleasing. There was an assortment of egg dishes, sausage, fresh fruit, and cream, as well as various cakes and scones. Reginald had never dined on such lavish food in all his life. It would be difficult to return to his former life, but Reginald would banish that thought from his mind, preferring to live in the present moment so that it might never end.

Once breakfast was done, the guests used the rest of the early morning into the afternoon to take care of their own affairs. Seeing as he was being taken care of by an extraordinary staff, Reginald took pains to compose a letter to his men, so they might know what the devil happened to him.

Jimmy, Ned, and Bo,

As you might guess, this wager has been won. Not only have I secured the friendship of the Duke of Faversham, but now I’m unsure as to when he will ever let me leave the estate. Tell Anders I will pay for the horse when I return and don’t let my success keep you from finishing the repairs on his farm.

Yours,

The Honourable Lord Reginald Simmons

As Reginald folded the letter and gave it to his valet, he had to laugh to himself. The men would no doubt be frustrated by the letter’s content, but Reginald wouldn’t pay it any mind. He’d won, and now, their wages would be his.

The afternoon passed pleasurably, thoughts of Lady Sarah still occupying his mind. He sincerely wished that she’d attend the picnic, but he knew how eager she was to return to London.

Once it was finally time for the hunt, a groomsman brought out Lucky Stars, and Reginald felt anticipation in his breast. It was a fine afternoon and just the right climate for a long ride. All the men seemed primed and ready on top of their horses, and it came as a huge shock when Reginald saw Sarah join the company atop her own horse, her legs split.

There was some grumbling amongst the men, but Reginald could only admire Sarah’s courage and skill. He didn’t know that she could ride, nor that she was bold enough to do so with a group of men.

Sarah spotted Reginald and quickly approached on her horse. Reginald remarked, “I must say, I’m impressed.”

“Women can ride; I’m sure you’re aware.”

“But often, not with such skill.”

“My father insisted that we learn.” Sarah reached down and petted the animal’s mane.

“And your sister?”

“She wished to stay behind. I know that she’s still weary from last night.”

“And you?”

“I’m full of energy.”

“I assumed that you’d return to London by now.”

Sarah met his gaze. “Yes, I thought that I was going to return at once. But seeing that the breakfast was so delightful, and Lisbeth begged to stay, I obliged.”

Reginald smiled. “And I’m glad that you did.”

The ride began, and Reginald and Sarah remained by one another’s side the whole while. The conversation was just as pleasant, if not more so than the night before.

“I trust that you slept well,” Sarah said.
