The four men watched as Tim Tom began to clean the bar, preparing for the following day’s drinkers and sinners. Was it a sin for Patrick to have kissed Sarah in that manner? After her gentle kiss, he could have left it at that. Instead, he pushed the matter further, kissing her with the intensity that he craved. No matter what, Patrick was determined to do that again and so much more.

The Hound’s Bone being closed, Patrick, Jimmy, Bo, and Ned exited, laughing and singing as they were accustomed to. But instead of returning to the farm, the men parted ways out front.

“If you’ll excuse me, gentlemen,” Patrick said, placing his hat atop his head. “It is time for Lord Reginald Simmons to depart.”

Jimmy laughed. “I do have to say, you disappear into that fellow quite quickly.”

“It’s becoming effortless,” Reginald said with a smile.

With that, he turned on his heel and walked over to Lucky Stars, who waited patiently. Reginald untied the horse and mounted, kicking his heels into the horse’s sides.

Speeding away, Reginald looked up at the night sky and marvelled at the stars. For him, Sarah was like one of those stars—shining bright with perfection in every way. She was his North Star, and Reginald was of the opinion that she might always light his way.

For a fleeting moment, he was Patrick again, reminiscing about his mother and how she always told him that he would make something of himself. His mother had said she’d had a premonition that he would excel, and find himself in a better station in life. For many years, Reginald thought this premonition to be false, but now he was beginning to wonder if his mother had been right.

Being Reginald Simmons was effortless—almost as though Patrick had been born into nobility. Although he didn’t know what the future might hold, Reginald was going to capitalize upon his newfound success and skill.
