His touch was electric now—even more electric than it had been before. What would it be like to dine alone? To be seated with Patrick by candlelight, with no one else to consume their attention? Sarah was unsure if such a thing would ever be possible.

The aroma in the dining room was intoxicating. Sarah was seated next to the duke once more, and Patrick was seated next to Lord John. He was perfectly in view, so that Sarah could admire him from afar.

The footmen entered carrying the fish course with a small salad on the side. Despite the tension she felt, Sarah found that she had quite the appetite after her bath.

“You smell like lavender,” the duke said.

“It’s such a luxury to take baths every day,” Sarah replied, knowing that the duke’s wealth was what afforded it.

“I can’t imagine how anyone does without,” the duke replied.

So, this was the decision that now lay before her? Sarah had to choose between a man of unparalleled wealth and a man with no wealth to speak of. Yet still, her affections were not swayed. There was only one man that had captured her heart, and that was a lowly working-class man from Hamel.

Just then, the butler entered and announced, “Lord Kelly Spencer, Duke of Glastonbury.”

The gentlemen stood while the ladies remained seated but turned towards the door. As the duke walked in, Sarah’s jaw nearly dropped to the ground.

Lord Kelly Spencer was the identical image of Patrick Day.
