Patrick gathered her in his arms and lifted her out of her chair, having never felt such happiness in his life. The question of Lord Kelly’s appearance momentarily left his mind. Despite the confusion, with Sarah by his side for the rest of his days, Patrick could truly be happy.

“I feel as though I’m the most fortunate man on this earth.”

“I am fortunate, as well,” Sarah replied. “Though I don’t know what the future holds for us.”

“If you’re speaking of financial matters, don’t pay it another thought. I’ll find a way.”

“I have my title … ”

“You may have to relinquish it.”

“That’s perfectly all right … if it means that I can stay with you.”

Patrick brought his lips to hers for a gentle kiss. He hungered and longed for so much more, but since she would be his bride, there was plenty of time for that.

And Sarahwouldbe his bride. Even if the earl refused, Patrick knew that he and Sarah would find a way. Their love knew no bounds.

He lingered on her lips and felt her return the kiss with equal affection and longing. After she pulled back to gaze into his eyes once more, Patrick gently reached down and took Sarah’s hands in his own. She was to be his bride. The men at Anders’ farm would scarce believe it if they were even still in Hamel. There was a very good chance that they had moved on, and Patrick was once more alone in the world to fend for himself. He cared not. Now that he had such a treasure to care for, he’d ensure that he provided everything that Sarah needed to live a comfortable life.

Just then, footsteps entered into the parlour, and Patrick turned to discover the Duke of Faversham. He scowled. “I see that the situation has grown dire,” the duke said.

“Your Grace, allow me to explain,” Patrick replied.

“There will be a great deal of explaining that you’ll have to do, whoever you are.”

“My name is Patrick Day.”

“I care not. To me, you’re nothing but avagabond worker, just as you said.”

Sarah stepped forward indignantly. “Stop this at once!” she protested.

“Oh, Sarah.” The duke cocked his head. “You of all people should know better. For days your father and I have known of the deception, and you were entirely ignorant.”

Patrick defended Sarah. “Don’t blame her. None of this was her fault. The fault is entirely my own.”

The duke spoke through his teeth. “I’m glad that you admit to that. Now, we’ll see what kind of punishment is in store.”
