“So, you resigned,” Amelia said.

“Yes,” Louisa responded. “I have to find a place somewhere in the town. Perhaps a townhouse in need of a maid or a manor house in need of a girl companion. I do not know yet, but I will find out soon.”

Standing with her Amelia said, “I still think that I could get you placementhere.”

Embracing her long-time friend, Louisa said, “I know, but I think it might be better for me to be away from herefor a while. I’ll send you word on where I am.”

“If you dare to not contact me, don’t doubt me when I say that I willtrawl every alley and house in the town beyond until I find you,” Amelia jested even while Louisa could see tears beading in her eyes. “Don’t fear, Louisa, you will find love again.”

While tyingher bonnet, Louisa hugged Amelia again and then moved from the porch’s steps. “I’ll see you soon, Amelia.”

She moved offthe path to the back lanes and headed to the solitary road that led to the town. She dared not to look behind her and let the temptation to turn back run to Isaac come over her. With her head set to the road, she walked, knowing without a doubt that she had left her heart behind her.
