How could something that brought someone so much joy ever be wrong? Sure, by other people’s measurements, he was breaking the rules and helping Matilda break the rules as well. But she was not hurting anyone. She wasn’t even hurting herself, for that matter.

“I am glad you are happy,” Aaron said to her as she flipped a page. After a second or so, she looked up from her focused gaze.

“It really means a lot to me that you helped me with this. More than you know.”

“It is nothing. The smallest efforts can make all the difference, I guess.”

Matilda smiled at Aaron and then went back to reading as the cool breeze passed over them both in the phaeton.

In that moment, Aaron did not need a tall mountain to climb; he did not need a thrilling adventure; he did not needexcitement. All he needed was Matilda.

Never before had he felttowards anyone the way he felt about her. There were butterflies, desire, contentment. Just looking at her made him happy. Wondering what she was thinking at any given moment could provide more for him than any book or journey. She was one of a kind.

In many ways, he never wanted to leave. A year was not enough time to get to know all theinteresting things about Matilda. She was a never-ending novel, an unfished poem, a song lyric that could be sung a thousand times over. Matilda was not only the incoming bird, but she was the sky that the bird soared from. She was the greatest adventure the year could hold.

Aaron realized one other important thing—he would do anything for her.
