“For someone who does not put too much emphasis on the future, you really are coming up with a scenario that goes against every bit of your life’s motto, no?”

Aaron laughed out loud, and another wave of pride washed over Matilda.

The sun had emerged from behind a cloud and shone brightly on them both. She observed his beard stubble in the golden light. It made him look like some sort of attractive mythical creature.

And then, the way in which she had studied him, Aaron did in return. The way in which his eyes went from her hair to her lips, she knew that his gaze was coming from a different place inside himself.A place that Matilda wanted to explore, much like a good story.

His face softened, his posture weakened, and because he leaned in, Matilda leaned in too. It reminded her of the first night they met. It was just like their kiss, and it seemed that another was on its way.

“I am back,” Ann said, interrupting them while stepping into the Phaeton. “I had run into the chef who could not locate one of the chickens. We found it, though, an interesting task, to say the least.”

Neither Matilda nor Aaron said anything, but their eyes spoke to each other instead.
