“Now, there is one thing that I do question if you’ll allow it, my Lord.”

She pondered what it could be. It seemed as though all the loose ends had been tied. “The floor is yours to speak freely.”

“Addison. She is the one that I do not trust. She is a vile woman to take advice from. I do not believe that she has your best interests in mind. There always seemed to be another agenda when it comes to her. The way in which she was so quick to banish the driver; the way that she quickly had Matilda shipped out, does it not seem calculated to you?”

“Calculation is often something that is far undervalued in today’s society,I’d say.” As soon as the words left her mouth, she could see the concern wash over his face. He had not been speaking his mind just to speak it. He did seem truly bothered by Addison’s intentions. “But I will heed your advice and take it under consideration. A watchful eye never hurt anyone.”

The steward nodded and took his leave.

Once he was gone, Catherine took a deep breath and reflected on their conversation. She may have not been the most liked or admired mother for towns over, but she believed that she was doing the right thing by Matilda. She would thank her one day in the future when the time came.

In that light, Catherine brought herself to the writing desk that was in the room and began to write notes to all the people she knew who were currently in Bath. It was time to let them know that she had arrived with Matilda and she was eligible to be matched.
