It amazed Aaron just how reckless he thought Aaron to be. “I have not said one word to her, no.” That was the point where Aaron realized it was rather strange how he brought her up randomly and would most likely require some sort of reason.

“Do you have romantic eyes for her?”

“Romantic eyes? That is the first time I have ever heard that phrase. It sounds like something someone who has never experienced romance before would say.” Aaron deflected the comment so that he would not need to answer it.

“I have experienced more romance than needed,” Thomas replied to a sceptical Aaron.

It was that comment that brought them to a standstill in the conversation. So Aaron went back to taking in the ride itself. He found that a wandering mind could best be cured by the sounds of nature. Listening to a bird chirp or a tree whistle in the wind never angered anyone, and if those things did, Aaron did not want to be those people.

But on that day, the chirping had suddenly ceased, and the sounds of leaves were only as loud as they were right before a storm. Looking to the greying sky off in the distance, Aaron realized that it was just that.

“Are you seeing what I am seeing?” Aaron asked as the horses seemed to get more jittery than they had been.

“The stains on the buildings in Hardon up ahead, yes I have noticed them before and think that they give the town a charm—”

“No, I am talking about the storm clouds.”

Aaron watched the observation wash over his face. He wondered how Thomas functioned without him around in his life prior.

“You are right. We should probably get back sooner rather than later.”

Aaron mushed his horse and challenged himself to get back to the Hardon House before the clouds broke. His horse galloped faster and faster as he felt the moistening air whip past him.

With his horse zooming over blades of grass, he could not feel it but knew that his heart was racing. And then, he heard the thunder roar and felt the first drops of rain. Within seconds, his clothes had gotten soaked. Because of how fast he was going, he barely felt that either.

It made him think back to the questions that Thomas had about working for Addison. Maybe it wasn’t the best deal, and maybe it made him feel somewhat trapped at times, but whether it was exercising the horses in the bright morning sun or riding back to town in the pouring rain, he was living. And maybe, in the year’s time, he would get to live around the Earl’s daughter.

He reached the Hardon house and stabled the horses. Once he had some cover from the rain, he looked back with some concern over whether or not Thomas was making it safely back.

The storm had been so heavy that it was difficult to see. After a few minutes of regret on Aaron’s part for riding so fast back, he watched the thin-framed man arrive on his steed. His soaked fabrics made him look as though he weighed fifty pounds less.

“I thought you had died back there,” Aaron said, watching the staff of Hardon House move things around in haste.

“We must have a meeting about our riding speeds one day, Aaron. You are going to get yourself killed with your recklessness.”

“What is everyone moving about for?” Aaron asked, ignoring Thomas’s comment.

“There is a party tonight. I’ve found that the best parties happen on rainy days because people enjoy the inside more.” Thomas got off his horse and took it to the stable.

“A party… interesting.”
