“What about passion?” Brian asked with a reserved certainty. “Passion can go a long way. Like this.” Just then Brian kissed her.

Harper turned away awkwardly, not quite knowing what to with herself and not quite knowing how to feel. The main thing that filled her chest was anger. That overthrew every other emotion.

“Maybe you should take your own advice when finding a wife.”

“I will never take a wife.”

The anger subsided and she felt her attraction surge for him. She had only been angry because of how sure of himself he was. But hearing how he felt about marriage, that intrigued her in a strange way.

They didn’t speak for the remainder of the ride. Her thoughts went in too many directions to keep track of. He had complicated things, that was for sure. The dynamic of their friendship would always be different for them after that. And for some reason, she had a feeling that it would not be for the best. Not because of her, but because of him. He would push her away just like everyone else in his life.

“I enjoyed the kiss,” she blurted out when the ride came to a stop. Maybe that would soften him.

He did not say anything.
