Isabel was being kicked out? It would explain why she hadn’t extended an invitation all week; she would still be reeling from the news. It wasn’t really something she wanted to be known, either. Richard felt awful that he hadn’t heard.

She should have confided in him. Richard didn’t know what he could have done, but he could have helped.

“Where are they going now? What will they do?”

“I heard from your father that they were going to head to London.”

“What? But Isabel hates London!”

“Do you think she’s got a choice about where she can go?” Cohen frowned. “What they’re going to do as they have practically nothing, I have no idea.”

“What are you talking about? They should have some money.”

“How have you not heard about any of this? They’re our neighbours!”

Richard sighed.

“Father and Thomas don’t tell me anything. Father says he wants me to focus on my work, and Thomas just doesn’t speak to me unless he has to, which isn’t much.”

“Then there are going to be quite a few things that are going to shock you. It’s going to be all over the county soon.”

Richard closed his sketchbook and put it to one side. He wasn’t going to be able to sketch now. Not when he was more concerned about Isabel.

“Tell me everything. Don’t leave anything out.”

“What good will that do? Do you think you can do anything?”

“She’s my friend, Nathan. I want to know that she’s safe.”

“She’s going to be safe.” Cohen tilted his head. “You don’t need to worry about that. They’ll have things planned out.”

But Richard was worried. And he didn’t like it.
