You won’t know until you try. And becoming a duchess would be perfect for your situation.

Isabel smiled and leaned towards him.

“What sort of man do you think I should focus my attention on, Your Grace? I’m sure you have a few ideas.”

“Oh, I can’t possibly speak about that, Miss Moore. I’m not your mind, so I can’t speak for your preferences.”

“But you would know which gentlemen would be suitable for me, wouldn’t you? And I would need some guidance on knowing who would be right for me.” Isabel touched his knee. “Would you say that I am safe with you and your advice?”

Galliston frowned.

“You want my advice on gentlemen who might be potential suitors?”

Isabel’s words were getting mixed up in her head. She didn’t know what to say without sounding like a fool. She sighed and pulled away.

“Oh, dear. I’m not very good at this.”

“At what?”

“Well ... talking to gentlemen.”

Galliston’s mouth twitched.

“Am I to guess that you were trying to suggest you might be getting a duke’s attention?”

“Something along those lines.” Isabel sighed and shook her head. “I didn’t think being forthright was a good idea. You might have said I was too forward.”

“Remember what I said, Miss Moore? I like a straightforward woman. Within reason, of course.” His smile went to his eyes, which seemed to glint in the gloom. “And, with a few more interactions, I believe you could capture a duke’s attention without any worry.”

Now that sounded more like it. Isabel brightened. Maybe she could do this. Perhaps she was able to find marriage and stability if she focused on the duke. He was handsome and wealthy, just perfect.

Maybe she could even love him. But the thought of that suddenly made her feel like she had swallowed a hard lump, and it was stuck in her throat. What was going on with that?

If she were to love someone, she couldn’t think of anyone better than a duke. So why was her mind saying this wasn’t going to happen?
