“They are.”

Richard stared.

“What ... when did that happen? It hasn’t been that long since she entered Society!”

“The duke proposed yesterday morning.” Lady Dunley sighed. “It didn’t take much for Isabel to say yes.”

It was like someone had just dunked a bucket of cold water over her head. Isabel was getting married. And to a duke, no less. Richard swayed. Of all the people to get engaged to, why did it have to be Galliston.

“Richard?” Lady Dunley touched his arm. “Are you well? You look like you’re about to faint.”

“I ... I’m well enough.” Richard swallowed. “If you’ll excuse me, Lady Dunley? I need to go and get some air. It’s getting a bit hot in here.”

“Of course.” Lady Dunley paused. “Accept my apologies, Richard. I know this is not welcome news.”

Richard didn’t stop to ask what she meant. He simply hurried away towards the back door. Knowing that Isabel was engaged and was hanging off the arm of a man Richard couldn’t stand looking at was making his stomach churn.
