“I’m sure he’ll be fine. He doesn’t like travelling alone.” Richard paused. “Will you still be here when I get back? He is staying a couple of streets away, so I can go to him and come back shortly.”

“I ... I believe we’ll still be here.” Isabel glanced towards the door. “I’ll let Mother know. She’ll be relieved that that is one less thing to do.”

“Good.”

They were silent for a moment. Then Isabel raised her eyebrows.

“Aren’t you supposed to be finding Mr Cohen?”

“Oh. Right. Of course.” Richard shuffled towards the door. “I’ll be back as soon as I can, and then we can go to Clovewood together.”

“All right.” Isabel managed a slight smile. “Thank you, Richard.”

Richard didn’t say anything further. He just hurried out the door and almost tripped down the steep stairs. Now all he had to do was hope that Cohen was awake and fine with travelling back to Devon when he had planned to go around London looking at the sights. And that he was able to send a message for his luggage to be sent on after him.

If Professor Ainsley could see him now and how much of a mess he was getting himself into, he would be laughing. He called anything of the heart that wasn’t towards work fun but pointless if you focused on it too long. Richard was sure he would be called foolish for chasing after a girl.

Especially a girl he couldn’t have.
