"There is someone who could probably help, though," he mused.

“Who?” I asked hopefully.

"Father Marius. He's not as powerful as Madaline, but he's strong enough that I'm sure he could help you get desensitized.”

"Do you think you would be willing to help me?"

"If you asked nicely," he scoffed. "What, are you afraid of him?"

"Isn't everyone?"

That actually made him laugh. "Come on," he said, walking over toward the door.

I blinked. "What about our sparring session?"

"You mean me throwing you around like a racquetball?"

I groaned. "Right." I followed him since that seemed slightly less dangerous than disobeying one of his orders. "Where are we going?"

"Father Marius's study, obviously.”

I put on the brakes, and he turned to face me, an impatient look on his face.

"Now?" I cried.

"Yes, now. Do you want his help or not?"

"Well, yeah, but…"

He grabbed me by the back of the shirt and pulled me along down the hall. "You obviously need someone to hold your hand when you talk to the big, scary priest."

"I don't know him like you do," I muttered, shrugging out of his grasp once we reached the end of the hallway. I looked up at the large wooden doors, swallowing hard. If anyone unnerved me even more than Arrow, it was Father Marius. He had never been unkind to me, but one word from him was all it would take for every hunter in this place to turn on me.

Castor included.

When Arrow opened the door without knocking, I felt like I was going to melt into the cracks between the floorboards. "You can't just—"

He ignored me as he strode into the office. Father Marius was sitting behind his desk, poring over a massive leather book that looked like some kind of scripture. I had been in the Church long enough to know it probably wasn't the actual Bible.

"Arrow," Father Marius said, looking up from his book and over at me with a quizzical expression. "And young Edmond. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

"Eddie needs to get skullfucked so he can protect his boyfriend from my bitch sister," Arrow said, folding his arms as he came to a stop in front of the desk. "And he's too much of a piss baby to ask you himself, so here we are."

I grimaced, wishing I could crawl under a rock and shrivel up. Father Marius just stared at us both, blinking.

"I'm not sure which horrifies me more," the patriarch replied, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Everything you just said, or the fact that I understood most of it."

"I'm sorry, Father,” I began. “It's really not—"

"Come here," Father Marius said, beckoning me to come forward before I could finish the thought.

I swallowed hard, having to will myself to take a step forward. I stopped in front of his desk and bowed stiffly. "Yes, Your Excellency?"

"You can relax," Father Marius said in a knowing tone. "I'm not going to make you spontaneously combust with my mind."

I looked up sharply. "Th-that's possible?"

He just smiled, his eyes twinkling like twin rubies in the dim light of the candles lit around the room. "So, you wish to enhance your resistance to psychic interference?"
