Maybe we’d gotten lucky and they didn’t know the alpha was gone yet, or at least not who was responsible.

I decided to circle back for the Abbey, since I had the vague sense that something was wrong again. It wasn't quite as overwhelming as it had been the last time, but I wasn't taking any chances.

I passed Baker in the hall on my way inside, and he didn't seem particularly alarmed. "Have you seen him?" I asked.

"In the hall for a second not too long ago," he answered. "He hasn't tried to get out, though."

I frowned. That was definitely suspicious.

I headed straight to my room, at once relieved and confused to find that Eddie was there. He was also curled up in another one of his blanket nests, and the familiar, honeyed scent that hit my nostrils immediately made sense of why he had been on such good behavior.

He was in heat.

My response was immediate. I hadn't even shifted yet, not that I had particularly tried, but I responded to him as intensely as any other alpha would.

I still wasn't used to the way my heart softened at the sight of him. I took a step forward, moving quietly because it seemed a shame to disturb him when he was resting so peacefully, even if I had plenty of reason to do so.

As I sat on the edge of the bed, gazing down at him, a flurry of different thoughts crossed my mind. Chief among them was wonder at the fact that I had ever thought I could stay away for any extended period of time. Even if it was what was best for him, Renata, and everyone else. It felt like it would be an unforgivable betrayal all the same.

His eyes fluttered open, warming as he looked up at me. He smiled a little, sitting up. "Hey. I was about to come looking for you."

"I'm glad you didn't," I said. "You need to rest."

He yawned. "What time is it?"

"A little after midnight."

His eyes widened. "Seriously? I slept all that time?"

"I told you," I said, stroking his hair. "How are you feeling?"

"Hot," he muttered, raking a hand through his hair.

"I'm not surprised," I said, pressing a hand to his forehead. He really was burning up. "You're in heat."

He blanched. "Again? This soon?"

I couldn't help but laugh. "Well, you didn't exactly resolve it last time."

"No, I guess not," he murmured. He looked at me with that sheepish little expression I had come to adore. “Guess I'm kind of high maintenance."

I snorted. "I'm not complaining."

He flushed as I climbed into bed with him, taking him into my arms. "Out of all the aspects of being a sort-of wolf, that's the one I don't mind,” I told him.

"You're an alpha. You got the good end of the deal," he said in a wry tone.

"There are benefits to being an omega," I told him, pressing a kiss to his neck. "I'm sure I could remind you of them."

"Father," he breathed.

"I love it when you say that," I whispered in his ear. "Especially when you scream it."

He shivered. "You say such wonderful, terrible things."

"I mean them," I told him. "You know I never make a threat I don't intend to follow through on."

He gave a husky laugh that drove me wild. I couldn't resist the urge to breathe in his scent. "You smell so good, it should be a sin.”
