“Oh, I just assumed….”

“No,” I cut in. “We’re going to the party together, but she’s not my date.”

When Lucy laughs, I’m sure I can sense some sadness in it. “Isn’t that pretty much what a date is?”

“No,” I say. “I just….”

“Logan?”

I just want you, only you. Forever.

“I just wanted to call you back. I guess you wanted to talk about counseling volunteering. Are you still interested?” I ask, trying to keep my cool.

There’s a pause. I wish I could reach through the phone, get access to her thoughts, and know if itwasjealousy I heard in her voice or something else.

“Yes, I am. I want to push myself.”

“Great,” I say. “If you want, we can meet soon to discuss it.”

“Just….” She pauses again. Her breath picks up, making my balls flood with seed, my shaft tingle with desire. “Just us?”

“Yeah.”

I can’t sleep without you, you beautiful, perfect stranger.

That’s what she is, technically, but it doesn’t feel that way. The moment I saw her, I knew I’d been waiting for her my entire life.

“Are you busy tomorrow?” I ask.

“I…no.” She sounds dazed. “Where would we meet?”

“Where’s convenient for you?” I ask.

“Umm….”

How is it possible for a woman to sound sexy, poised, shy, attractive, sassy, clever, and kind all using the wordumm?

I shake my head in sheer disbelief, almost finding it difficult to accept.

Maybe I would, if it wasn’t for this pounding certainty in me, getting louder each moment, impossible to ignore.

I don’t want to ignore it.

Except if I care too deeply and she doesn’t feel the same, it would mean giving up this part of my life for nothing.

But Lucy, even if she rejects me, couldneverbe nothing.

“There’s a restaurant near the office where I work, just around the corner. We could meet there after my shift?”

“Sure,” I say, trying to keep my voice casual, hoping I can mask the tremor of possession. “That sounds good.”

There’s a crash from the next room. Maxine has dropped a glass on the floor, and now she’s staring down at it like she has no clue what to do, like she’s never seen broken glass before.

“I’ve got to go,” I tell Lucy, the only woman I ever want to be with. “Text me the time and place.”

“I will,” she says.

“Goodnight, Lucy.”
