I stare up at the man who has stolen everything from me and returned it tenfold… my heart, my soul, my sanity. He’s my calm, and he’s my passion.

He iseverything!

And just as I’m about to open my mouth and shout my answer, dancing lights behind him catch my attention. My mouth falls open.

If this isn’t a sign from the heavens, then what is?

Aiden follows my gaze, and the biggest beaming smile graces his face.

“Looks like the heavens agree with me.” He winks cheekily. “So, Ella Rose O’Neil? Will you marry me?”

This time I don’t hesitate. Kneeling up to be closer to him, I open up my arms wide as if embracing the universe and yell from the top of my lungs.

“Yeeeeessssss.”

It’s the only possible answer. How could it not be after Aiden’s declaration? Each word seemed to penetrate me deeper, filling me more completely.

I take his gorgeous face into my hands. “Yes,” I say again, softer this time, pulling his head gently down for a brief kiss.

“My soul knows you, and my heart trusts you. My gut feeling has been waving green flags all along. When something happens, be it funny or sad or weird, you’re the first person I want to share it with these days. For the rest of my life, I want you to be the first and the last person I see every day.” I peck his cold lips that seem to be permanently smiling. “Everything is better with you, Aiden Lennard Burg. I laugh harder, I love harder… and I come harder,” I add with a wink. “I love you so much. I want you to be mine and I want to be yours… now and forever.”

I bring him in for a kiss. It starts out tender as we pour every ounce of love we have for each other into it.

This is perfection. The pinnacle of my life so far.

We kiss and kiss under the dancing green and pink lights of the aurora borealis… the heavens putting on a spectacular show to celebrate our love…. Well, at least that’s what it feels like.

When we come up for air, Ade pulls off his gloves and then mine and takes the ring from the box. With the greatest care, he slides it onto my ring finger and reverently lifts my hand to his mouth and kisses it.

“Mine,” he breathes and then softly kisses my lips. “Yours,” he whispers against them.

I close my eyes in pleasure, reveling in this moment. I wish I could freeze it, could forever bask in the happiness that’s saturating every part of me.

After all the upsets in recent years, especially the last few months… is this finally my happily ever after?

There is so much contentment, so much love… and rapture.

The stunning light show above us continues and we snuggle back under the blankets and watch the sky in awe. Searching the firmament for the moon, I notice the eclipse is nearly over, with only a small portion still in shadow.

“We missed the moment the moon went completely dark,” I whisper into the air.

“That was probably when I was waiting with bated breath for your answer,” he jokes, though, I think there’s more truth in it than he wants to admit. “For a moment, I wasn’t sure what you would say.”

“How could you have any doubt? Sure, we haven’t been together long, but when you know, you know, right?”

“Right,” he agrees, his face alight with joy. “And we can have a long engagement if you prefer. I just needed to make my intentions clear, needed you to know how much you mean to me… and I really wanted to see my ring on your finger.”

I pull my hand out from under the blanket and stretch it out in front of us. “It’s gorgeous,” I say, choking up again. “When did you get it?”

“Mmm,” he hums happily, taking my hand and stroking it lightly. “I got it in Chicago.”

I sit up and look at him, stunned. “Chicago? But that was just after we got together… officially, anyway.”

“When you know, you know, right?” he repeats my words.

“Right,” I say as I kiss him again, letting our lips play together in a seductive dance.

“I wanted to ask you right after I came back from Chicago, but I don’t think you would have said yes… and we had company. Even today was a gamble, which, lucky for me, paid off. When Gary told me I had go to Alaska, he also mentioned the lunar eclipse; he’s a bit of an astronomy geek. Couple that with the possibility of seeing this spectacular light show”—he points to the sky that’s still lit with in the brightest colors—“it was obvious it had to be today.”
