The future looks so uncertain. But I have to have faith and believe that everything will turn out okay. If only Ella didn’t have such a rare blood type. But miracles happen. It’s one that I’m standing here today after my own brush with death all those years ago.

God, wouldn’t be so cruel and take away the one person who means most to me in the world, the one person I’ve waited my whole life for… I’ve done so much good. I deserve a bit of happiness… with her.

She’s been with Tiero for the last half hour, her heart rate mostly even. I suspect he’s still sleeping.

Voices in the corridor catch my attention. It sounds an awful lot like…

“Rhia,” I say as Ella’s best friend storms through the door. Her eyes are red rimmed, her face slightly blotchy from crying. Lex is right behind her. We bump fists in silent greeting and support.

When she sees the empty bed, her face contorts in horror. I’m quick to reassure her. “Ella is okay. She’s okay. She’s with Tiero.”

Rhia launches herself into my arms and sobs.

“Oh, Aiden. When I saw the empty bed, I thought… I thought…” She can’t say it out loud, and I’m grateful for it. “It won’t come to that,” I say, full of confidence I’m not feeling.

More sobs follow. “I can’t lose her, Aiden. She’s been my best friend for half my life. She means the world to me.”

“She does to a lot of people,” I quietly reply. Lex untangles his girl from me and pulls her close to his body, rubbing soothing circles along her side.

Glancing down on my phone to check that my fiancée is okay, I notice a few spikes in her chart. Shit. Gualtiero must be awake and they’re talking. But so far, so good. If it continues like this, she’ll be fine.

“Is there any news on a new heart for her?” Rhia asks, hopeful. Her face falls when I shake my head no.

“Goddam,” she curses, fresh tears rolling down her cheek.

“Listen, Rhia. You need to get all the upset out of your system now,” I tell her firmly. “We can close the door, and you can rant and rage, but when Ella returns, she cannot see you like this. You have to hold it together. We cannot stress her out. She needs to stay calm under all circumstances. Do you understand?” I ask her, holding her gaze as Lex passes her a tissue.

She nods. “I know. I just can’t help it.”

“You must… for her sake,” I mutter just when my phone begins to beep frantically.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

I’m half out the door in an instant, calling over my shoulder to Rhia and Lex, “Stay there.”

“What’s happening?” Rhia yells, but I don’t answer, my only focus on getting to Ella.

I run into her as I turn the corner to enter Tiero’s room, almost knocking her over, catching her just before she goes flying backwards from the impact.

I pick her up, and her arms wind around my neck, her face hiding in my shoulder.

“Shhh, Sunshine,” I croon. “It’s okay. It’s okay. I’ve got you. Take deep breaths for me.”

Doctor Simmons is there as well, checking her out the best he can while on the move. He’s earning his salary on this trip… I wish he didn’t have to be on constant alert. He’s as nervous as I am whenever Ella wants to spend time with her ex-lover.

“Tie…Tie…Tiero…” she stutters in between sobs.

“Shhh, my love. Calm down. It’s gonna be okay.”

Her body is trembling in my arms. What the hell happened? What has he told her to upset her so much? He should know better. We agreed to keep her calm. Fuck, I want to rip off his head.

“He wants to give me his heart,” Ella croaks, her voice sounding strangled as I place her gently on the bed and Simmons hooks her up to the machines.

What???

“Ella,” Rhia’s calls out, rushing to her, throwing her arms around her shoulders.

“Rhia!” Ella exclaims through her tears. “You’re here.”
