“Now tell me how you’ve been, and what’s been happening.”

Where should I begin? Whenever I talk to Rhia these days, there seem to be life-changing event after life-changing event to fill her in on.

“Oh Rhi, I’m in so much trouble.”

Chapter Ten

Ella

“Whathappened?”Rhiaasks, alarmed. “Lex has reassured me that Tiero took the bait and thinks you’re in Austria. He hasn’t returned to Sicily and has been spotted in Switzerland.”

“Why is he in Switzerland when he thinks I’m in Austria?”

“That guy who tried to kidnap you twice… Molinaro? It appears he’s going after him.”

Oh no.

I sit up, immediately worried for Tiero’s safety. I don’t like the idea of him going after Molinaro. It’s too dangerous. What if he gets injured, or worse, killed? My hands fly to my stomach, circling it gently.

Oh god, peanut. Is your daddy okay?

His death would solve my immediate problems, but I can’t picture a world without him in it.

He’s got to be okay! And he is… I would feel it if he wasn’t, wouldn’t I?

“Molinaro is in Switzerland?” I ask to distract myself.

And then it hits me. “Did he go there to find me?”

Rhia sighs. “Yeah, we think he did. He left a few dead mafiosos in his wake… Tiero’s men, thankfully no civilians.

“You were so close to being discovered, El. It makes me sick thinking about it. Thank God you got out of there when you did.”

“But how do you know Tiero took the bait if he’s not going to Austria?”

“He has search teams out, and they’ve been asking questions at the places Lex left the breadcrumbs.”

“This entire situation is so fucked up. I hope Tiero is all right.”

The moment the words leave my mouth, images of Tiero getting shot in the chest float into my mind. A shudder runs through me, and my heart squeezes painfully.

Oh God!

This is fear talking, right? It didn’t really happen?

Panic courses through me. This is my mind throwing up worst-case scenarios, right? It would be too coincidental for me and Rhia to have this conversation and something bad actually happening.

But I need reassurance. “Does Lex have eyes on Tiero? Can he please check if he’s okay? Like right now?”

“Why? What’s going on?” Rhia asks, sounding worried.

“I’m not sure. I just had these images of him being shot pop into my head.” I jump off the bed, unable to sit still, and pace the bedroom.

“Hold on. I’ll go talk to Lex.”

The line goes silent for a few minutes, and I tread the length of the room anxiously.

“Lex is on the phone to his people. I’ll let you know the second I hear anything.”
