When she eased away, he captured her gaze and stared at her coldly. “Are you done?”

“You’d make a great lover, Tim.”

“I’m flattered. See you tomorrow.” He spun, walked to the door, and left.

Chapter Nine

In the car, Tim couldn’t stop musing about the women controlling his thoughts. If he wanted to forget Annette’s cheating, Jessica would be the answer. But what if he wanted Erin in his arms?

A blip announced a text from Erin. Speak of the devil.

Hi, Tim. When are you coming to pick up Brianna? My mother expects you to stay for dinner.

Teresa’s delicious meal would be more than welcome, but in his present mood he would rather stay away from Erin.

Hi, Erin. I’ll pick up Brianna in 15 min, but I have too much work to be able to stay. Please thank Teresa for me.

Ok.

Her laconic answer puzzled him. Had he offended her?

His phone rang a minute later. It was Teresa calling.

“Tim, what’s going on with you, son? We haven’t seen you in ages.”

“Sorry, Teresa. I can’t stay for dinner tonight. I’m very busy at work, and I really appreciate you taking care of Brianna.”

When he pulled into the Perkins’s driveway, Brianna waited next to Teresa in front of the door. They both came toward the car. His daughter jumped in, while Teresa handed him a cooler.

“Here’s dinner for you and Brianna, since you’re too busy to stay.”

He felt like dirt. “Thank you, Teresa. You’re my guardian angel.”

“Will we see you next Sunday?”

“Yes, I hope I’ll be done by then. Where’s my list for the week?”

“Aren’t you too busy for grocery shopping?” Her crafty tone drew a smile out of him.

“I’ll enter the order on the supermarket website and ask them to deliver it to your house. See you next week. Thanks for dinner.” He waved the pan case in his hand and repressed a sigh.

As he drove away, he smiled at his daughter. “I’ve missed you, pumpkin. Did you have a good time with your friends?”

“Fantastic, Daddy. It’s so much fun in their house with all the kids. Granny always bakes goodies.”

“How is Ms. Erin?”

“She’s very nice, but when she gives orders, everyone obeys right away.”

“You too, I hope?”

“I have no choice, Daddy. David and Rachelle look at me and frown. ‘Mom said… this or that,’ which means we have to do it right away, or else I can’t come to their house.”

Tim chuckled. “At least, you’re learning to follow the rules.”

“Mommy never asked me to follow so many rules.”

Tim lost his grin. When had her mother followed any rules?
